(aka "Dark Forest" or "Devil Seed" or "Seed People")

directed by Peter Manoogian
USA 1992

Geologist Tom Baines (Sam Hennings, DROP ZONE) returns to his home town of Comet Valley to examine a supposed meteor found by old friend Thurman (Charles Bouvier, BAD DREAMS) and lecture the local space nuts (just as the only bridge out of town will be closed for three days of maintenance). No one believes young Kim (Holly Fields, COMMUNION) - niece of Tom's childhood sweetheart Heidi (Andrea Roth, THE COLLECTOR) - when she swears that her father Frank (John Mooney) and mind-reading housekeeper Mrs. Santiago (Anne Betancourt, JACK'S BACK) are "possessed" but strange things happening in the orchards at night have been put down to meteor hunters and the people who venture in come back out different. SEEDPEOPLE unfortunately doesn't stray too far enough from its obvious source INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, so the film sort of plods along with the audience way ahead of the script (the flashback structure, the narrations, and the cuts back to the present kill whatever momentum the film might have had). John Carl Buechler's monsters are silly (and not in the entertaining way they usually are) and the gore is well within R-rated standards of the nineties (the film would probably be rated PG-13 today). Most disappointing is that one kind of expects more from a Paramount-era Full Moon feature than a very average (direct-to-video pic without the studio's stamp of character (it could just have easily convinced as a Vidmark or Prism pick-up).

Comments

Both discs utilize video masters probably dating back from the 1992 LD and video releases with the UK encode slightly cleaner and sharper. Both discs feature the VideoZone behind-the-scenes segment, while the import also features the trailer (as well as trailers for ten other current and forthcoming Full Moon titles).

Full Moon's edition is from the 2007 FULL MOON CLASSICS VOLUME 1 box set (with ARCADE, BAD CHANNELS, NETHERWORLD, and SHADOWZONE) but Full Moon released a single disc edition [B009TT04UO] this January (it is likely a direct port of the box set version).
