(aka "Kyuketsu" )
directed by Naoki Yoshimoto
Japan 2011
Suffering from strange ailments (including bleeding when she prays), Ayumi can't help but be drawn to a five-hundred year old local legend - told by her boyfriend - about a vessel washing ashore with a Romanian coffin holding a vampire who was resurrected in a ritual involving a virgin sacrifice. When her boyfriend arouses her bloodlust rather than her libido, she discovers that the legend is true and that she is to be initiated into the vampire's intimate little coven with her boyfriend as the sacrifice. There really isn't much to the SANGUIVOROUS, which is three-quarters silent film recreation and the rest in the vein (no pun intended) of nineties avant-garde vampire flicks like NADJA and THE GIRL WITH THE HUNGRY EYES minus the quirkiness. The film works at a somnambulant feel and courts boredom frequently but it does culminate in some nightmarish images during the boyfriend's stalking by the head vampire (Buton dancer Ko Murobushi). The results may play better in a live screening with musical accompaniment (as the director intended and as it had premiered and screened at a few festival showings), but the work on disc is better contemplated than taken in for thrills or chills. |

Tidepoint's
single-layer disc features a high bitrate presentation of
this film which runs just under an hour, although the look
of the film is so manipulated with high contrast,
solarization, and various overlays that it is hard to judge
just how faithful the video presentation is to the look of
the film. The Dolby Digital stereo track is intermittently
active but there are long stretches of silence (appropriate
since this is part "silent film"), while the optional
English subtitles translate both the dialogue and the
intertitles. |
