The Crash (1932) Registered Nurse (1934)
Ruth Chatterton and Bebe Daniels, two of the greatest leading ladies of the Pre-Code era, are the main attraction in this riches to rags “working woman” double bill. Storied director William Dieterle takes the reins in the first picture, The Crash, directing newlyweds Ruth Chatterton and George Brent. The pair play a married couple who broker wifely favors for inside stock tips. When the market crashes, both must learn a new way to live. And love. Registered Nurse finds Bebe Daniels leaving society dreams behind after her husband cracks up. Returning to the working world, ‘Ben’ (Daniels) tries to stay loyal to her mentally ill husband while fending off advances and her own temptations working the “night watch.” With Lyle Talbot, Sidney Toler, and Beulah Bondi. Directed by Robert Florey. |

Before Warner Archive collection relaunched Forbidden Hollywood with Volume 4 and Volume 5, they released a number of pre-code double features, like this one or two Dorothy Mackaill sets (reviewed HERE and HERE). [more reviews of such sets to come]. This set collects two female-centered First National Pictures features, each running around 60 minutes. The fast-paced B pictures are very enjoyable with both Ruth Chatterton (in The Crash) and Bebe Daniels (in Registered Nurse) giving very strong performances. It is easy to see why the extramarital affairs of these films would be considered pre-code. The dual-layered made-on-demand disc features new progressive transfers that suffer due to the film elements with scratches and damage, but all things considered has very good contrast and grey-scale. The sound, likewise, is as good as the materials being used for the transfer. A single extra is a theatrical trailer for The Crash. This set comes recommended for any fan of pre-codes - you will be pleasantly surprised with both features. |
