directed by Omar Flores Sarabia
Mexico 2013
With his parents off to the beach, shy Pablo (Joe Diazzi) decides to finally meet his online girlfriend face-to-face to consumate their relationship; however, he makes the acquaintance of excitable Marco (Carlos Luque) who talks him into dining and dashing and then a road trip to Real de Catorce in search of peyote. Marco continually proves to be exasperating traveling companion, causing Pablo to repeatedly question coming along on the trip; but, as Marco's mood changes and he starts revealing (or unraveling) more about himself and his reasons for the trip, Pablo also learns some things (or has them badgered out of him by Marco) about himself. Although marketed as gay cinema - certainly by DVD distributor Breaking Glass Pictures releasing it under their "QC Cinema" sub-label - PEYOTE isn't necessarily a film about sexual identities. What Pablo and Marco share is intimate and apparently physical, and they do come to love one another in a fashion; but it remains ambiguous as to whether either is changed by the act (more exploratory than experimentation) apart from a broadened sense of self. |

Breaking Glass'
barely dual-layer disc features a progressive, anamorphic
transfer of this HD-lensed film. Some of the softness can be
attributed to the SD encoding, but several exterior shots have
combined blown-out highlights and a glow around the actors that
looks like a digital filter (or a combination of them) for an
intended look. No complaints about the Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo
track (the sound mix is really sedate with little in the way of
atmosphere). The burnt-in English subtitles appear error-free.
