(aka "Noches de espera" or "Longing Nights")
directed by Tiago Lećo
Spain/Portugal 2013
LONGING NIGHTS promises a "candid portrait of four relationships higly loaded with eroticism from beginning to end" and that's what we get; although to little effect because of a lack of thematic connection, interconnection of storylines, or even much of a sense of closure as transvestite prostitute Aitana, gay club hopper Pierrick, straight drug dealer Jorge, and lesbian Rita maneuver through Barcelona's night life. The only common problem seeming to be the allure of casual sex and how that interferes with them forming meaningful connections - Aitana with a female prostitute, Pierrick with a smitten waiter, Jorge with his own pregnant wife, and Rita with her girlfriend; although it does not really seem like any of them want those connections (after his wife has left him, Jorge only tries to contact her because the house is a mess and he does not know how to shop). There's little discernible rhythm to the way the director moves between stories, and the end result seems like an experiment in feature storytelling - this is the first feature of director Tiago Lećo who only has a short as his prior credit at IMDb - that was provocative enough (the sex scenes are quite explicit) to get festival play and home video distribution. |

Comments |
Breaking Glass' single-layer DVD features a progressive, anamorphic transfer of this intentionally dark and gritty-looking film. Detail varies but is generally good in close-ups, and there does not seem to have been any added edge enhancement. Twenty-odd minutes into the film, the aspect ratio shifts to 1.45:1 for about thirty seconds (presumably an encoding anomaly). The Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo track is fine and I only noticed one spelling error in the otherwise good burnt-in subtitles. Extras include a featurette about the transvestite character Aitana including unsued footage, as well as a photo gallery and trailer. |
