Slickly shot and well-cast with Irish film and TV regulars, JUMP's non-linear structure only gradually starts to become apparent after the first act. While it holds the audience's attention and takes some thought, the end result is more of a novelty than a means of drawing parallels between the characters in the separate story threads. Based on a stage play by Lisa McGee, JUMP follows three interconnected stories taking place on New Year's Eve in Derry, Ireland. Depressed Greta (Nichola Burley, Andrea Arnold's WUTHERING HEIGHTS) has given up plans to escape to "the other side of the world" in favor of suicide, but is saved from jumping off a bridge by Pearse (Martin McCann, the CLASH OF THE TITANS remake) who is searching for his missing brother. When Greta learns that Pearse suspects her gangster father Frank (Lalor Roddy, Steve McQueen's HUNGER) was behind his brother's likely death, Greta postpones death to help him get even with her father. Meanwhile, Greta's friend Marie (Charlene McKenna, DOROTHY MILLS) goes out to celebrate with wild friend Dara (Valene Kane, Cosimo Alemà's WAR GAMES) and find trouble first with a jealous wife, and then with the men (OUTCAST's Ciarán McMenamin and THE SHORE's Packy Lee) who Frank has sent after Pearse to get back his stolen money. |

Breaking Glass'
progressive, anamorphic transfer of this HD-lensed flick that
would probably look better had it been given a dual-layer encode
(but it shares the DVD9 with a feature-length extra), but the
image features no evidence of edge enhancement and is acceptable
given the film's independent origins. The Dolby Digital 2.0
stereo soundtrack has clear dialogue, but the volume of the
techno music is such that you may want to rely on the closed
captioning rather than raising the volume to make sense of some
of the sometimes softly-spoken Irish-accented dialogue (the also
reportedly has only a stereo soundtrack). |
