(aka "In Your Hands" or "Contre toi" or "Sous ton emprise")

directed by Lola Doillon
France 2010

In this oh-so-very-French tale of abduction and seduction, single obstetrician Dr. Anna Cooper (Kristin Scott-Thomas, FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL) returns from her holiday and is abducted by Yann Ochberg (Pio Marmaï, A HAPPY EVENT) who holds her responsible for the death of his wife during a routine surgical procedure. He imprisons her in a room with bricked-up windows and announces his intent to break her and then kill her (and himself). Eventually, the two find a lusty common ground between loneliness, loss, and solitude (enforced and otherwise); but what will Anna do when she has the opportunity to escape? The feature debut of director Lola Doillon (half-sister of actress Lou Doillon), IN YOUR HANDS is slight yet deliberate, lingering only long enough at the tops and tails of individual scenes, and ends in a very arty "French" way (i.e. maddeningly ambiguous) asking whether Anna has come to her senses or retreats towards solitude rather than opening herself to the possibility of loss. Jean-Philippe Écoffey (HENRY & JUNE) is underused as the police detective, but is the only other cast member who gets more than a few lines of dialogue. MIDNIGHT IN PARIS' Marie-Sohna Conde plays one of Anna's colleagues but Doillon's script barely uses her to convey some of Anna's character (although the voice of Anna's mother on the phoneis director Doillon's mother: film editor Noëlle Boisson).

Comments

Artificial Eye's anamorphic DVD is barely dual-layer, but the high bitrate seems more than adequate for this short feature (a Region B Blu-ray edition [HERE] will also be available on the same date). The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is restrained but effective with some piercing sound effects breaking long silences (a 2.0 stereo downmix is also included). A trailer (as well as a start-up trailer for an on-demand streaming service) is the only extra.
