TRUE STORY OF A WOMAN IN JAIL: SEX HELL's Hitomi Kozue (OFFICE LADY DIARY: POACHING) is back as Mayumi Hojo. Fresh out of solitary, she's not taking any garbage from queen bee Igami. Mayumi also doesn't take kindly to Igami's hazing of the new prisoners and makes an instant enemy in Igami and an instant friend in virginal Yukie. While Mayumi is back in solitary for another fight with Igami, Yukie is released early for good behavior and immediately abducted by Yakuza pimp Andou who blackmails her with photographs of her assault taken by warden Saotome. Mayumi learns about Yukie when she overhears Igami and Saotome during one of their interludes. When she gets out of solitary, she sees an article in a newspaper about a prostitute who committed suicide and recognizes Yukie's face. When Igami gets pregnant, Mayumi deals with it in a similar manner to the first film. Saotome is exposed, but the prison is more concerned with preventing scandal and looking good for the upcoming inspection by non-government parties (including Andou on the prowl for some new girls), which is of course the perfect time for a riot.

Like the first film, TRUE STORY OF A WOMAN IN JAIL: CONTINUES is short and satisfying. Despite some content you wouldn't see in even the grungiest of American WIP (women in prison) films, this one isn't quite as excessive as some of Nikkatsu's later fetish-oriented entries. It's a given that the authorities are corrupt and many of the prisoners are victims of circumstance, so the plot isn't particularly complicated; this allows for a parade of girl-fights and sex scenes (with the usual creative angles and Japanese censorship blurring). Although Kozue's character has the same name, this film gives her a different back story. SEX HELL made her a nurse who was set up by her doctor/lover when he accidentally killed a patient. Here, she's a rape victim who tracked down, seduced, and killed on of her assailants (with one of those gnarly blades that women in these films seem to have no trouble concealing even while naked). The two films are not really dependent on one another and are pretty interchangeable (but they might make a nice double bill). Director Kôyû Ohara would also direct NEW TRUE STORY OF A WOMAN'S DETENTION CENTRE: LOVE HELL.

Comments

Impulse Pictures' attractive single-layer, progressive, anamorphic transfer is on par with the previous Impulse Nikkatsu releases. There's a little distortion at the high end of the Dolby Digital mono track, but dialogue is always clear and the optional English subtitles are error-free. Jasper Sharp's liner notes have very little to say about this film and coverage of Nikkatsu's brand of women in prison films was discussed in the notes for TRUE STORY OF A WOMAN IN JAIL: SEX HELL. Here, he discusses the other output of series director Kôyû Ohara. There are no other extras.
