(aka "Os Inquilinos" or "The Tenants (Don't Like It, Leave)")
directed by Sergio Bianchi
Brazil 2009
The old Rio de Janeiro neighborhood where Valter (Marat Descartes, SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES) grew up has changed since his parents built their home by hand. Elderly Dimas (Umberto Magnani, HOUR OF THE STAR) has been forced to share his home (by an estranged wife who wants to sell the house) with three young punks whose nighttime activities keep the rest of the neighborhood from sleep. Encouraged to go to night school by his wife Iara (Ana Carbatti), Valter starts to worry about the safety of his wife and kids (especially after hearing about the much-publicized rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl as well as a number of crimes committed by three unidentified men). The lack of respect he gets from his new neighbors is not the only insult to his manhood since Iara has been complaining about the neighbors to her younger brother Fabricio (Robson Nunes, MAIDS) who may take illegal action against them with the help of some of his friends. Add Valter's arty EYES WIDE SHUT-esque fantasies of infidelity between his younger wife and any one of the three young hoods to his desire to protect his family amidst Brazil's current social unrest and things start to get a little paranoid and claustrophobic... |

The Global Film Initiative's disc of THE TENANTS is what we've com to expect. Single-layer and anamorphic, but interlaced with burnt-in subtitles (which are readable but sometimes flit by quickly due to the speed of the dialogue delivery of some of the actors). The 2.0 stereo audio is boisterous (in terms of both music and sudden noises), but I'm assuming it was originally a 5.1 mix going by the Dolby Digital logo in the closing credits. There are no substantial extras on the disc, but there is a DVD-ROM PDF discussion guide. |
