Then, in "Lady Gangster," Faye Emerson shines as a no-nonsense gun moll whose dreams of becoming an actress are complicated when she is blamed for a heist. The Warner Archive Collection filled in a void in home video format of classic (and not so classic) releases, but some of the films owned by Warner fell through the cracks known as public domain and some not-so-stellar releases have been released on the marked of such films. Roan Group is usually better than average company releasing public domain films. Unfortunately, after a long stint with Troma Home Video, they stopped releasing anything new. This set from 2004 collected two Warner Brothers crime pictures still unavailable from the studio itself. They Made Me a Criminal is a mainstay of public-domain releases, but the print used by Roan Group for this release is in very poor shape. The contrast is nonexistent and the transfer is very muddy with many instances of digital artifacts. The audio is inconsistent and there are no subtitles provided. The second feature, Lady Gangster is a vehicle for a B starlet-in-training Faye Emerson (this was her first starring role) and features one of the first roles for Jackie Gleason. The print for this title fares much better - with better contrast and less damage on the print, but the digital artifacts are still here. There are some extras included - the first chapters for two serials - Universal's Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe and Republic's Radar Men from the Moon. A few text screens with some information about They Made Me a Criminal finish off the extras. We can only recommend this release for the second feature, as They Made Me a Criminal exists in a better public domain prints, but we really hope that Warner Archive will rescue these two titles from the public domain giving them proper releases they deserve. |
