(aka "En kärlekshistoria" )

directed by Roy Andersson
Sweden 1970

Two adolescents meet and cautiously fall in love in beautiful surrounds during the peak of an idyllic Swedish summer.

Oblivious to social boundaries, they innocently create their own milieu in contrast to the distorted relationships, disillusionment, and world-weariness of adult life around them.
Andersson’s feature debut is a sunny, optimistic work that has drawn comparison to the early films of Ingmar Bergman.

***

It's love at first sight when Par (Rolf Sohlman, CITY OF MY DREAMS) meets Annika (Ann-Sofie Kylin)... or something, because these two have never been in love before and the first romantic stirrings of their relationship are sensitively explored by TV commercial director Roy Andersson (YOU THE LIVING) in his feature debut. Despite the English title which emphasizes the "Swedish" origin of the film - as well as the Greek title MIA EROTIKI ISTORIA - Andersson's film is a deceptively simple look at first love against social backgrounds, family problems, and the awkwardness of just being young (but, to be young in Sweden 1970...). Swedish pop singer Anita Lindblom plays Annika's single aunt (whose flat is used by the youngsters for an aborted encounter that is not explicit, although perhaps fleshier than one would expect in a film about characters that age) and Tommy Nilsson (who plays Annika's brother) also became a rock star in Sweden.

Comments

Artificial Eye's dual-layer, progressive anamorphic transfer is quite attractive. There is some minor edge enhancement, but the image pleasingly suited to the era and the film's feel (colorful yet slightly gritty). It is likely derived from the same restoration that appeared on Swedish DVD in 2005. The Dolby Digital mono audio is also in good condition (optional subtitles are error-free). The only extras are excerpts from five Andersson films (including the disc's main feature).

It should be noted that the Swedish edition by Studio 24 features DTS and Dolby Digital tracks as well as English subtitles for the film, a commentary track, and some featurettes.
