directed by Louis
Malle
France / Italy 1965
Director Louis Malle and co-writer Jean-Claude Carriere satirizes everything from American westerns to revolutions, dictators, the Church, priesthood and even sex itself! When two women – both named Maria – unwittingly invent the striptease circa 1910, they become such a hit that enthusiastic audiences strip along with them! But when one of the Marias falls for a handsome revolutionary (George Hamilton), she finds that she has unwittingly embroiled the two of them in an armed peasant revolt! |

ADDITION: Kino Lorber - Region 'A' - Blu-ray (November 14'): Everything seems superior - to varying degrees - over the old DVD. There is a shade more information visible in the top of the frame and the HD shows some pleasing depth. This is single-layered with a modest bitrate but the 1080P looked quite good in-motion. Audio gets the lossless treatment and generally advances sounding crisper and tighter. There are optional English subtitles (the dialogue IS French) and the disc is region 'A'-locked. Only a trailer as an extra. This is a very entertaining film. I really enjoyed revisiting it and the brighter colors and better resolution helped with my appreciation.*** ON THE DVD: A little better than average fare from lackluster MGM. Sharpness is not bad, skin tones seem a trifle red, contrast is acceptable. Original audio and pleasant subtitles make for a decent buy at around $12. Quite an interesting film, if the comedy is somewhat dated. Yes, we endorse as a decent buy. Many will love the Brigitte Bardot and Jeanne Moreau team-up. out of |
