Directed by Bert I. Gordon
USA
1957

While overseeing the atomic tests in the Nevada desert, Army colonel Glenn Manning (Glenn Langan) is exposed to extensive... amounts of radiation. As a result, Manning grows, and grows, and grows, at the rate of ten feet per day. This sudden height gain adversely affects the poor man's mind, and soon he's as mad as a hatter. Looking for all the world like Mr. Clean in a diaper, the Colossal Man goes on a murderous rampage, laying waste to numerous landmarks.

Comments:

Well, FINALLY - we get this masterpiece of kitsch on DVD. There are plenty of reasons to remember The Amazing Colossal Man. Whether with the wide-eyes innocence of a child's Sunday television Matinee-style viewing, a Drive-In excuse, or just those atrocious effects.

The trouble is that the DVD is equally as poor as the film - but not in a charming way. It is interlaced, has a permanent chroma flare in the bottom left corner and the single-layering is riddled with artifacts. This is obviously taken from some VHS or similar source. On the positive - it is pretty clean and I do admit enjoying the presentation despite the limited image.

Audio is acceptable but there is some hiss and it sports optional Japanese subtitles. There are no extras. Those who have been patiently waiting - may get some pleasure from this disc - but, or course, it is far from ideal.
