(aka "Bar Bahar" )
directed by Maysaloun Hamoud
Israel/France 2016
Attorney Leila (Mouna Hawa, ZAYTOUN) and DJ Salma (Sana Jammelieh) are two Palestinian women living independently in Tel Aviv who have their style cramped when their roommate Rafifa goes off to get married and her reserved hijab-wearing cousin Nuor (Shaden Kanboura, SAND STORM) moves in while the college dorms are being decorated. Despite the relative freedoms of city life for these three women away from their families, they each experience varying degrees of oppression, from party girl Leila who falls head over heels for liberal Ziad (Mahmud Shalaby, JAFFA) only to discover that he is reluctant to introduce her to his family, Salma quits her day job as a cook in a restaurant when the management forbids the staff speaking Arabic but must endure her family's repeated attempts at matchmaking when she is interested in women, and Nuor's fiancé Wissam (Henry Andrawes) hides his controlling and abusive nature behind religious piety, disapproving not only of the "sluts" that are her roommates but also disparaging her desire to complete her degree in computer science to support their household with a second career. When Wissam takes advantage of the impurity he ascribes to an increasingly stronger-willed Nuor, Leila and Salma come to her aid but taking on tradition is fraught with uncertainty and danger that only true friends can face together. |

Film Movement provides a proficient encode to a film shot on the Arri Alexa in deliberately underlit environs and treated to a contrasty color grade. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track comes alive during party scenes and other sequences where source music is allowed to dominate. Optional English and French subtitles are provided along with English Closed Captioning. Extras include a making-of in which the director discusses how underrepresented the world explored in the film is and expresses enthusiasm about the perfects shots and working her actors up to the emotions. A short film by the director is also included along with trailers. |
