I've been sent stuff like this before - but never got around to peeling the cellophane - until this Double Feature package. Soooo, yeah - these are what you might expect - very low budget sexploitation flics. Not as poor as I was expecting though. 'Sexploitation' is rougher around the edges - and perhaps more 'pure' in that sense than the first feature. The films are on separate DVDs with Platinum Pussycat being on a dual-layered disc. Both transfers are interlaced - but the quality of Platinum Pussycat was decent beyond that. Some scenes look quite sharp and the source must have been in good shape but later there is a sequence with prevalent vertical scratches. Actually, they kind of add to the flavor. Audio is predictably hollow and scattered but close, I'll wager, to the way it was originally. There are no subtitles offered.
Supplements include a decent and sometimes amusing commentary from film historian Michael Bowen and a chap called Chuck Smith - who appears to have worked on The Sexploiters with some camerawork. It had some good points - worth a listen and it doesn't take itself very seriously. There are also seven 'Platinum Loops' - mostly sex-related segments and the second disc has a bunch of trailers - similar to the genre. To be honest the descriptions are better than the actual films but I can see these offering a hoot in the right venue (gag at a Bachelor party?) I'll admit to getting a kick out of Platinum Pussycat but, I presume, this is a pretty narrow market - for obvious reasons. |
