Crime Against Joe is a below average B-thriller distributed by United Artists in 1956, just as widescreen aspect ratio became a standard. Wooden John Bromfield sleep-walks through his role of an artist accused of murder; Julie London is much more memorable as a friend helping him to clear his name. The film has some dashes of noir atmosphere, especially the ending, but can't sustain it for the whole running time, all 70 minutes of it.
A made-on-demand release from MGM presents an open matte transfer of this film (notice extra headroom in all screen shots). The contrast is decent, but the chroma is evident is some scenes (see second and fifth captures). The sound is decent, but per usual standard for these releases, there are no subtitles or captions provided. There is also no trailer available on the disc. Unfortunately, the film and the disc do not meet our expectations, so we can not recommend this release. Your money is better spent elsewhere. |
