directed by Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska
Canada 2009

This future Troma Films pick-up is the deliberately provocative directorial debut feature of twins Jen and Sylvia Soska. After a hazy night of partying Badass (Sylvia Soska) and her rocker pal Junkie (actress/stunt performer Rikki Gagne, DARK MOON RISING) reluctantly drive Badass' sister Geek (Jen Soska) over to a church to pick up her youth group pal Goodie Two Shoes (C.J. Wallis). When the quartet discover the body of a hooker (Tasha Moth) in the trunk of their car ("with drug... and stuff"), Badass and Junkie are uncertain if they had anything to do with the murder so they decide to get rid of the body. Geek wants to call the police and Goodie thinks the woman deserves a proper burial. Thus begins a road trip involving necrophilia (and implied bestiality), disemboweling, blown-away drug dealers, knocked-out eyeballs, torn-off limbs, and cowboy pimps. Eventually Geek and Goodie find out about a series of hooker killings, exonerating Badass and Junkie, but the killer is following them (cue "torture porn" sequence) and soon Geek, Goodie, and Junkie must rescue Badass. For all of its forced quirkiness, gore, perversions, transgressions, and overuse of the word "f*ck" the film-festival-tailored DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK is not likely to offend anyone but the easily-offended, but more seasoned viewers . The filmic style is derivative but also deliberate and consistent (the opening five minutes is especially well-realized) despite the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink "first time filmmaker show reel" of a narrative. The flashback death of the hooker is so ridiculously protracted that the extreme violence of the sequence stops offending. Gagne and Wallis give the better performances of the four leads and there are sweet moments where the four manage to convey the fondness for one another that is supposed to be keeping them together in the narrative. EL MARIACHI's Carlos Gallardo even has a special appearance as God. The Soska sisters have already begun shooting their next film MARY.

Comments

Bounty Films' dual-layer DVD features an anamorphic, progressive transfer of the film with stereo audio and two commentary tracks. The directors' commentary features the two female directors/stars, who re-appear in the production commentary joined by actor/cinematographer/editor/composer C.J. Wallis. There is overlap between the two tracks and the playback of the film is sometimes too loud for the commentators to be heard.

The deleted scenes section offers extensions of the character introductions and the motel scene. The behind the scenes featurette is a montage of captioned production video rather than a series of interviews and clips. There is also a brief conversation with EL MARIACHI's Carlos Gallardo who makes a special appearance in the film. Three trailers for the film round out the extras.
