(aka "Worthy Deceivers" )

directed by W. Lee Wilder
USA 1955

Valerie Bancroft's untold millions cannot buy what she needs most - time! Her doctor estimates that her heart condition might allow her to live for 12 more months. Beautiful Valerie cannot resist the advances of lothario Rick DeVilla. The smooth operator wines and dines the heiress and after a whirlwind courtship, they are wed. These events, however, have not slowed down Rick's torrid affair with a sexy nightclub dancer. Meanwhile, Valerie is thrilled with her new husband and her health improves dramatically. Impatient to gain control of his wife's fortune, Rick decides to speed things up a bit, even if a little murder is required to finish the job.

John Bromfield was noted for his roles in horror films including Revenge Of The Creature (1955) and Curucu, Beast Of The Amazon (1956) but achieved his widest fame on the small screen starring as Frank Morgan on "Sheriff of Cochise" (1956-58) and "Texas Marshal" (1958-60). Also featured is gorgeous Rosemarie Bowe who left modeling and film to wed actor Robert Stack.

Comments

Call me a masochist for buying these Alpha releases, but for some of these B pictures, this is only option to see and own them on digital media. I guess, I keep waiting for a miracle and find above average transfer, but alas this is not it. We already reviewed Alpha disc of another noir directed by Billy Wilder's estranged brother, W. Lee Wilder - Three Steps North. The Big Bluff is a 71-minute fast-paced B picture that has a few surprised up its sleeve in the last 10 minutes. John Bromfield, usually not a leading man, plays a gigolo that tries to kill off his wealthy terminally ill wife played by gorgeous Martha Vickers.

The interlaced transfer is weak, looks muddy and most likely derived from a video source. There are a few damaged spots in the print. The audio is likewise, very problematic. A typical Alpha release for a untypical crime drama. Unfortunately, we can not recommend this release especially since the film is available in better quality on YouTube.
