(aka "Off Limits")

Directed by George Marshall
USA
1953

OFF LIMITS is the first and only teaming of comedy legends Bob Hope and Mickey Rooney. Bob Hope plays a boxing trainer who loses his one and only champion to the draft and decides to enlist, so he could keep an eye on his prized fighter. He is left holding the laces when his boxer is discharged – until enlisted private and amateur boxer Herbert Tuttle (Mickey Rooney) asks Bob to train him. Bob is more interested in Tuttle’s aunt (Marilyn Maxwell) than actually training the young contender. This screwball comedy was directed by George Marshall (Fancy Pants).

Comments:

Olive Films is handling another Paramount release and another Bob Hope film - as they did with My Favorite Spy. Off Limits (entitled here as 'Military Policemen') eventually settles into a buddy-picture with 'The Mick'. It's all good fun with Marilyn Maxwell as the comedic love-interest.

Like previous Olive Film DVDs this is dual-layered, progressive and bare-bones. It looks very good in the original black and white - 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Contrast is reasonably impressive. You can actually see a bit of grain. This transfer provides a strong SD presentation.

The unremarkable audio is flat mono but everything is consistent and dialogue clear. As stated there are no subtitles, nor extras - not even a trailer or any subtitles.

Bob Hope has a fan-base that goes back more than 60-years and Mickey Rooney is still making headlines today. I believe this is the first time this particular film is available on DVD and most will know what to expect - a good time - the style of entertainment that we no longer have nowadays. Off Limits is no one's best work but it provides some, much needed, nostalgia.
