USA 1941

As the paid companion to wealthy Leonora Fiske, Ellen Creed (Ida Lupino) has become accustomed to her employer’s good humor and generosity. When her deranged sisters (played with great relish by Elsa Lanchester and Edith Barrett) are evicted from their lodgings in London, Ellen invites them to stay for a visit. As the visit turns into weeks, Leonora’s patience is exhausted, and she orders the sisters, and Ellen, to leave. Desperate to protect her sisters and give them a secure place to live, Ellen takes drastic measures — then tells everyone that Leonora is on a trip, leaving her in charge of the house. But when the neighbors and Ellen’s roguish cousin (Louis Hayward) become suspicious, she has more to worry about than just her sisters’ welfare. This gothic suspense thriller boasts great comic performances plus an excellent dramatic role for Ida Lupino. Evelyn Keyes plays a supporting role as the love-struck housemaid.

Comments

Despite the compromised aspect ratio showing on Columbia Classics on Demand web site, the 1941 film is presented on this made-on-demand disc in original full screen aspect ratio. The progressive transfer is gorgeous, without any marks or damage.

The single layered disc also includes a restored trailer for the film, but per usual standard for these MOD discs, there are not subtitles provided. A highly recommended release. (Movies Unlimited have been selling the bootleg release for some time, but that disc was removed and they are selling the authorized disc from Sony Pictures now).
