(aka "Little Mother" or "Nobody's Wife" or "She Said I Do")
directed by Garson Kanin
USA 1939
Unemployed Polly Parrish (Ginger Rogers) impulsively picks up a baby left at orphanage doors at Christmas. Everyone assumes the foundling is hers, including Polly’s playboy ex-boss (David Niven), who offers her a job if she’ll live up to her maternal duties. A paycheck would be handy, so Polly complies. Then the boss’s tycoon dad (Charles Coburn) assumes the infant is his secret grandson…and things really spin out of control. Buoyed by Rogers’ irresistibly endearing performance, Bachelor Mother is one of those rarities, a brilliantly cast comedy where everything – plot, pacing and dialogue (thanks to Garson Kanin’s savvy direction and Norman Krasna’s witty script) – is exactly, hilariously right. |

1939 is justly called the best year in Hollywood with many classics coming out that year. Among all the usual contenders like Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Stagecoach, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and many more is this screwball comedy from RKO with Ginger Rogers and David Niven. Available previously on DVD in other countries, the Warner Archive Collection debuts this title for region 1 market. Unfortunately, the title didn't go through the restoration it required and although progressively transferred the print source has many instances of dirt and marks. The grain can be excessive, but the blacks are deep. The mono soundtrack doesn't have any issues. There is no trailer provided for the film, but the MOD disc has a generous 24 chapters. We didn't have a chance to compare this releases to other regions, but the movie itself is highly recommended especially for the holiday season. |
