USA 2008

While on his morning jog, businessman Scott (Wayne Casey) is abducted at gunpoint by white trash criminals Razor (Paul Schilens) and Julie (Lisa Wharton). When Julie shoots a cop and Razor has to finish him off, Scott panics and there is a struggle over a gun which causes the car to run over a man on a family picnic. The family of the dead man pull the three from the car and beat them before taking them back to their home for matriarch Red (AnnieScott Rogers) to decide on their fate. Red decides to hold them for a while and tells them she will let them go one at a time so as not to arouse suspicion. In the meantime, she and the family subject them to further abuse while making them toil on their farm. When it seems that Razor and Julie have been let go, Scott is hopeful that he will be released too until they invite him up for dinner and he finds Razor's ring in the food. Realizing that the family are cannibals, Scott knows he must get away before he becomes the main course. RAZOR'S RING is interesting as a post-HOSTEL film that largely eschews gore in favor of its captivity scenario but there's really little to recommend for it. The DV cinematography is colorful but contrasts are blown out and the acting is generally terrible apart from Rogers. Fight scenes are laughably choreographed (some tighter editing might have helped) and the digital effects (used economically in place of practical effects) including an explosion and a character being hit by a passing train are particularly bad. The viewer won't be surprised by the main ingredients of the dinner to which Scott is the guest of honor nor the surprise ending or the last second "shock" the follows it.

Comments

As with MVM's release of BACKWOODS BLOODBATH, RAZOR'S RING is presented in an NTSC-PAL transfer of this DV feature with the expected softness from upsizing and annoying ghosting.

Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo audio is fairly active although the music sometimes drowns out dialogue but that is likely a fault of the original mix. Trailers for the feature and other low budget American horror films out and upcoming from MVM round out the extras.
