(aka "Girl Boss Guerilla" or "Sukeban gerira" )

directed by Norifumi Suzuki
Japan 1972

Leader of the Red Helmet Gang Sachiko (Miki Suigimoto of TERRIFYING GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL) rides into Kyoto with her gang. They beat a competing girl gang lead by Nami (Reiko Ike) but then discover that the Tsutsui mob group want to make money from the gang's operations. Boxer Ichiro comes to their aid and in doing so runs afoul of the Tsutsui and is beaten. Sachiko and the gang escape to a hotel on the coast where Ichiro is training for a fight but the Tsutsui are hot in pursuit. As with TERRIFYING GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL (part of the Girl Gang's sister series), beneath the exploitable elements there is an underlying theme of female competition being manipulated by corrupt males for their pleasure or gain - defeated Nami is just as resentful of the Tsutsui bid for control even though the group is led by her brother - and the final battle (whether against the men or the female villains) as a backlash against that corruption (here represented by the Yakuza, gynecologists, and priests). That said, there's plenty to be enjoyed by the more casual viewer thanks to abundant nudity (Sugimoto's girl gang tattoo is on her breast so she bares it to identify herself), vicious girl-fighting, and a funky oh-so-seventies exploitation score (but if you want bad girls in Catholic school uniforms, you have to check out the sister series).

Comments

As with Panik House's disc of TERRIFYING GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL, the anamorphic, progressive, and single-layer transfer of GIRL BOSS GUERILLA looks great for a near forty-year old film.

Mono audio is strong and the subtitles always legible. Like the Chris D commentary on the former "Pinky Violence" disc, the commentary here is informative and points out the various onscreen and offscreen series regulars. The film's trailer looks as good as the feature. Still galleries, production notes, and filmographies round out the disc extras while an insert sticker reproduces the censored cover image rather than the more racy poster image it is based on.
