(aka "Blind Date" or "Appuntamento in nero" or "Scandal in Black" or "Naked Rage" )
directed by Antonio Bonifacio
Italy/Germany 1990
Angela (Mirella Banti) is raped in the restroom of a porno theater (showing Walerian Borowczyk's EMMANUELLE 5). The press creates a scandal for her diplomat husband John (blues musician Andy J. Forest, Tinto Brass' CAPRICCIO and MIRANDA) who is having an affair with Angela's top model friend Eva (Mary Lindstrom). What's worse is that Angela is not only being stalked but also being blackmailed by the porno theater projectionist who knows details about her assault that she wants to keep quiet. John and Eva decide to use the stalking scenario to get rid of Angela but she's plotting against them with the help of her stalker while the police are completely clueless. Antonio Bonafacio's BLIND DATE (onscreen title: APPOINTMENT IN BLACK) is contrived but fairly diverting plot-wise although it suffers from attractive but uninteresting characters (voiced by a familiar dubbing cast) going through the thriller and erotic motions (the sex scenes are fairly monotonous and seem like they were shot to target the American erotic thriller market). Most of the characters are rotten, John rails against a woman being in charge of the police investigation but she and her female partner are depicted as being completely oblivious with no interest in pursuing the loose ends of the case even though they have their suspicions. There is a surprising instance of dismemberment gore and a sting-in-the-tale ending dulled by some laughable optical effects. |

Although the cover refers to this film under the title BLIND DATE (although it is not listed as such in references), the onscreen title is APPOINTMENT IN BLACK. The English opening and closing credits seem to have been sourced from an analog videotape with plenty of video noise around the lettering. The rest of the presentation looks only marginally better with little detail in long and medium shots and mosquito noise in close-ups suggesting an analog tape source (not a first for MYA). *** The English track is louder than the Italian one and has less hiss. The cover lists both tracks as stereo but neither are particularly active (the music occasionally sounds more expansive but there are no directional sound effects). There exists an Italian-only R2 import from Avo Film which is reportedly open matte although it is not known if it is better quality (Avo Film was a ubiquitous cult video company in the VHS rental days but some of their DVD output seems to have used the old video masters). |
