Canada 2009

Sorority sisters decide to hold a bikini car-fundraiser in the middle of nowhere. Their bus breaks down near a spooky-looking gas station; so naturally, the girls, the sensitive hunk, and the annoying, virginal horndog decide to throw the carwash there and are soon falling prey to a hulking maniac dressed as a mechanic. Shot in Canada with relative slickness, BIKINI GIRLS ON ICE despite its title plays like one of the more polished late eighties/early nineties cash-ins on the dead genre (sort of like RUSH WEEK). There's some humor but refreshingly it's not a parody. The acting varies from competent to annoying (Canadian accents are apparent although it does not seem to be set in Canada since the one bilingual character is called a show-off for communicating with a French motorist couple who stop by the gas station to get killed. There's somewhat of a TEXAS CHAINSAW influence with the gas station and nearby creepy house setting with lots of running in between. The suspense is non-existent as is the gore for the most part (rather than an unseen presence, we see the killer swinging his tools at offscreen victims) and there never is any explanation as to why he packs his victims (female and male) in ice. There is little nudity although the killer does collect the female victims' bikinis after killing them. The biggest problem with the film isn't the approach really, its just nothing special in a "going through the motions" sort of way.

Comments

Kaleidocope's screener is a DVDR and features none of the extras that will appear on the finished disc (streeting in July) which are quoted as consisting of an audio commentary, behind the scenes, bloopers, deleted scenes, and auditions.

The screener is also NTSC with a nice progressive and anamorphic image (it remains to be seen whether the final encode will be an NTSC-PAL conversion) with Dolby Digital 2.0 surround-flagged audio. A brief French language exchange is subtitled.
