(aka "35 Shots of Rum" )

directed by Claire Denis
France 2008

35 Shots of Rum is a character driven drama that revolves around a group of people who live in a apartment building and their relationships with each other. The cast of characters include Lionel a father who works as a subway engineer, his daughter Jo, the other man in Jo's life Noe and a taxi driver named Gabrielle.

35 Shots of Rum was directed by Claire Denis (Chocolate). The plot is flawlessly laid out with every character and their journeys are given just the right amount of time. The film's visual style is never obtrusive as it takes on a observer role that documents each event that unfolds. The film's standout moment occurs when the four main characters on their way to a concert end up at a bar after their car breaks down. Very little is said during this scene and yet some much about the characters is revealed through their gestures. At the heart of this film is a the relationship between Jo and her father Lionel. At the beginning of the film they appear to have an inseparable bond. By the time the film's melancholy finale rolls around, Lionel finally comes to terms with the realization that he is no longer the only man in his daughter Jo's life.

Comments

35 Shots of Rum is presented in a anamorphic widescreen that preserves the film's original aspect ratio. This HD sourced transfer looks great all around, colors look vibrant, flesh tones look healthy, black levels look strong and details look sharp throughout.

This release comes with one audio option, a Dolby Digital stereo mix in French. The audio sounds clear and balanced throughout. Removable English subtitles that are easy to follow and error free have been included.

This release comes with an abundance of extra content which includes a trailer for the film, a stills gallery, a four page booklet with a essay about the film, a twenty two minute interview with screenwriter / director Claire Denise who discusses 35 Shots of Rum and a lengthy one on one discussion with Claire Denise which covers everything she directed up to Friday Night.
