Directed by Kevin Brownlow, Andrew Mollo
UK 1965
'The German invasion of England took place in July 1940 after the British
retreat from Dunkirk. Strongly resisted at first, the German army took many
months to restore order. But the resistance movement, lacking outside support,
was finally crushed. Then, in 1944, the resistance movement reappeared.' *** It Happened Here (1965)--an intricate imagining of England in 1944 if it had lost the war in 1940 and been occupied by the Germans--qualifies as science fiction. And the second, Winstanley (1975)--an account of the failed effort of a nonviolent religious sect called the Diggers to establish a commune in Surrey in 1649--qualifies as a period piece. But to my mind both films are science fiction, because a vanished era is the focus of the sort of curiosity, awe, and wonder commonly reserved for the future. In part because of the fanaticism about period details, both works are theoretically and stylistically somewhat naive movies, endowing the past with a voluptuous sense of mystery rarely found in more accomplished pictures. NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.
BFI have given us an outstanding release here. The 1080p
film is housed on a dual-layered
Blu-ray with a maxed out
bitrate. Though the various faux newsreel footage, and early shots of
the film have a damaged, grainy vérité quality to them, this is
intended. The later scenes, shot on different stock/cameras, show a huge
level of detail and contrast. The large range of blacks in the image is
quite noticeable and strongly welcomed. It should be reiterated that the
film smartly uses a pastiche of media to recreate the times that this
alternate universe would exist. Viewers will not immediately be blown
away by the image as it is initially very rough and damaged,
intentionally so. But when the transition hits, the high quality of the
transfer is laid bare. Very impressive work from BFI. |
