(aka 'You Were There')
Directed by
Vincente Minnelli
USA 19
Although best known for his marvellous MGM musicals, Minnelli also directed several superbly stylish melodramas (The Bad and the Beautiful, Some Came Running). This early example is a sombre, faintly noir-ish romantic thriller, with Hepburn marrying the handsome, wealthy, but cruel Taylor, and finding help when she needs it from his mysterious brother (Mitchum). Echoes of Rebecca, Gaslight, etc, but in its quiet understatement it becomes less of a full-blown weepie, more a haunting and subtle study of malevolence and gullibility. Surprisingly, it finally impresses by the very absence of those memorably hysterical, stylistically baroque touches that make Minnelli's musicals and later dramas so wonderful. |

Firstly - I haven't completed the entire Kate Hepburn Boxset, but like what I have seen so far. At present Undercurrent is only available in the Katharine Hepburn Collection which also includes Morning Glory / Sylvia Scarlett / Without Love / Dragon Seed and The Corn Is Green. Decent, if not stellar transfer, of this Noir-cum-thriller from Warner. Fairly clean if a bit dullish and faded - certainly not up the spoiled standard we have been accustomed to from Warner's classic output in the past. The digital artifacts are quite fine and resemble grain. The dual-layered and progressive image is supported with optional English or French subtitles. The audio is clear and consistent.
Typical of Warner boxsets - extras are highly irrelevant to the film. We have a driving instruction/scare film presumably from the era or rather later and a cartoon - the latter I always enjoy. As a Noir - it seems to fit the bill to some degree and although Taylor's performance is slightly unbalanced - Hepburn is gregarious, sexy, wonderful and a bit hammy and we don't get enough of Mitchum. Nice shadows and taut direction from Minelli. Noir fans will get a much-needed fix, although it's not a classic of the style. |
