(aka 'The Bone Yard')

Directed by James Cummins
USA 19
91

A policeman (Ed Nelson) and a psychic (Deborah Rose) link cult mayhem to a morgue (run by Norman Fell) where ancient ghouls are on the loose. The film plunges into the nightmarish experiences of a portly, depressed psychic (Deborah Rose), whose involvement in a grisly child-murder case leads her and her detective partner (Ed Nelson) to an imposing, fortress-like mortuary. Chen the owner of the funeral home and prime suspect in the case, claims the three mummified corpses in question are not children but ancient demons known as “Kyoshi”. It seems the little monsters have been around for centuries as a result of an age-old curse and can only be placated with offerings of human flesh — with which the mortician has been supplying them his entire life. When Chen is jailed on murder charges, the under-fed ghouls awaken in search of dinner, trapping the staff inside the mortuary walls and devouring them. The survivors, including Rose and Nelson, use every means at their disposal to combat the demons, which have possessed the bodies of morgue attendant Mrs. Poopinplatz (Phyllis Diller) and her poodle, mutating them into hideous monsters.

***

Children turned into zombies wreak havoc in a coroner’s building with just a burned-out psychic, an experienced cop and two coroners to stop the madness.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Both "The Boneyard" Blu-ray discs bring us the film in HD 1080p MPEG-4 AVC Video with 88 films having a slightly higher bitrate. Code Red claims an "Extensive Color Correction Exclusive" to their release and though I prefer this version, it is only slightly noticeable. In most shots you can see a bit of difference in the black levels, having a somewhat deeper and darker color. Both transfers look pretty remarkable for a film from 1991. There is some grain evident in most shots, but it is not distracting and the detail seems to be a faithful representation of the original theatrical negative.

Audio: Both films offer us a Linear PCM 2.0 Stereo track. The Code Red
Blu-ray has a somewhat richer and deeper sound, being technically more robust (24-bit vs. 88 film's 16-bit). The 88 films' Blu-ray sounds pretty good though, with the appropriate spooky sounds and effects doing all they can in 2.0 channel stereo. The film's score is thanks to John Lee Whitener and it is a beauty. The score has moments that recall horror films of the past while still being unique (I could've sworn I heard a Friday the 13th sound sound cue, not to mention a few moments that recall Penderecki's work used in The Shining). 88 Films Region 'B' Blu-ray offers optional English subtitles. Code Red, on their Region FREE Blu-ray has none.

Extras: 88 Films and Code Red both give us a great audio commentary with director James Cummins and producer Richard F. Brophy. The two give lots of juicy tidbits about the film, including the fact that 'Binny' the dog playing 'Floofsoms' was also the punk-rock dog from "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark" and "Ruthless People". The two even talk about a scene where the production had to be shut down for a few hours, due to two actors being at each other's throats. Both Code Red and 88 Films also include identical interviews with the director and producer, running about 30-minutes on the Code Red, and split into two separate options on the 88 Films. Code Red has one exclusive extra, being an interview with actress Sallie Middleton by the producer Phil Smoot. This is an interesting addition and recommended for fans of the film. 88 Films also includes the film's trailer, this is not on the Code Red release. Both have reversible cover art (strangely being the cover of the other
Blu-ray.)

This film really surprised me with its humor and style. Fans of "so-bad-its-good" cinema will be sure to eat this up. Phyllis Diller and Norman Fell are a riot. Though both transfers are worthy of your purchase, I would personally lean towards the Code Red
Blu-ray for their ever-so-slightly better blacks, better sound, and the extra featurette. The 88 films does have a higher bitrate and looks great in motion. English subtitles are absent from the Code Red Blu-ray. The back cover of the Code Red says "approx. 98 minutes" but this is not true, as the film runs approx 93 mins, just like the 88 films version. All things considered, either choice is sure to suffice. You won't forget this movie.
