| Pretty much a one-note film, centred on Kitano’s forceful central turn as the Korean who, having immigrated to Osaka and found it tough, takes out his frustration and machismo on his family. There are, certainly, some themes to this relentlessly grim, brutal movie – the infectious legacy of violence, the relationship between social inequality and private behaviour – and Kitano inflects his character with whatever subtle nuance is allowed (notably in the perverse tenderness sometimes extended towards his afflicted mistress), but it’s so insistent in its miserabilism that it’s hard to remain caught up in the repetitive proceedings. |

Both transfers are interlaced and are roughly the same size. The running time is exactly the same on both as are the subtitle font and chapter stops suggesting that the Kino disc may use the program stream of the Panorama disc while dropping the half-bitrate DTS-ES track (both discs encode the Dolby Digital 5.1 track at 384 kbps). The Kino disc has no extras but unless you need DTS, that should not be the deciding factor since the R3 set's only extra has no English subtitles (and no Chinese subtitles for that matter). The Korean R3 disc has more extras but neither the film nor the extras offer English subtitles (and the DTS track is half-bitrate and non-ES).
The Australian DVD has DTS, 5.1 and 2.0 but no substantial extras (a gallery and trailer) but the running time listed in reviews suggests it is NTSC-PAL. Besides the DTS-ES track, what the Panorama versions do have in their favor is that both the single and double disc editions are cheaper from importers (11.95 for the single disc and 16.95 for the double disc at HKFlix and not much more at YesAsia) than the Kino disc at retail. |
