(aka "Nuda per Satana" )

directed by Luigi Batzella
Italy 1974

While driving on a lonely stretch of road in the middle of the night to answer a call, Dr. William Benson (Stelio Candelli) comes across the crashed car of Susan (Rita Calderoni). He goes up to a nearby castle to seek help but is confronted by ghostly images and then Susan in period clothing addressing him as Peter. Susan herself recovers and also seeks help at the castle onto to meet William's lusty double Peter - who addresses her as Evelyn - as well as cloaked man who might be the devil (James Harris). William and Susan are sucked into a sensuous and horrifying nightmare world where the past and present merge as Satan and his mostly-nude, mostly-copulating minions attempt to claim their souls. Little seen outside of Italy until its rescue by Redemption (with the help of Nucleus Films' Marc Morris), NUDE FOR SATAN is an occasionally silly but often atmospheric fever dream that feels like a cross between a Mario Bava film and one by Renato Polselli (BLACK MAGIC RITES aka THE REINCARNATION OF ISABEL) with quaint in-camera special effects, lots of nude women cavorting in slow motion, Satanic whippings and coupldings, and a hilarious giant spider all held-together by Antonio Maccoppi's trippy Techniscope photography, Alberto Baldan Bembo's bizarre score, and writer/director Luigi Batzella's (aka Paolo Solvay) disorienting editing (the film would make a great companion piece to Batzella's more conventionally-filmed THE DEVIL'S WEDDING NIGHT).

Comments

Redemption's new anamorphic transfer of NUDE FOR SATAN is likely taken directly from the PAL MPEG2 image (and converted to NTSC) of the Italian R2 DVD from Raro as the transfer begins with an Italian-language text screen about the transfer (I do not have the Italian R2 but the text screen looks like those that preface some other Raro releases). Burned-in Italian subtitles during an English language portion (from which the Italian track is missing on all versions) also suggests this. Although the Dutch DVD's running time is longer than that of the Image disc (which was correctly transferred at film speed), the Dutch DVD is not an NTSC-PAL conversion. Rather, the Italian negative had been re-edited by the producer to include hardcore inserts (shot on set). Some non-hardcore footage removed to accommodate this additional footage and keep a 90 minute running time is now lost. When the film was transferred originally for Redemption (from a 2-perf Techniscope negative), the hardcore footage was removed (a bit of missing footage was inserted from the trailer). Both the Redemption and Image DVDs feature this softcore composite but the Image disc is progressive and runs at the correct speed while the new Redemption disc is anamorphic and PAL-converted (the running time for the feature in the bitrate graph includes the trailer and the Redemption intro).

The English and Italian trailers on the Image disc are the same trailer with English text with the choice of the English track or the Italian track while the new Redemption disc sports an Italian trailer with Italian text. Authoring on the Redemption DVD is a little dodgy. The trailer for KILLER'S MOON runs 1:37 but it freezes at 34 seconds and skips back to the menu on both my computer and hardware DVD player but the main feature seems unaffected. The earlier 4:3 NTSC and PAL discs also boast sharper images than the new Redemption 16:9 edition.
