WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Hello friends! In the
current environment it is getting
more and more difficult for us to
maintain the website. Our income has
severely been diminished by the
increasing number of DVD/Blu-ray
producers selling discs from their
own sites. At present they don't
offer us affiliate commissions which
are our major source of income
(Amazon, Barnes and Noble etc.). To
continue producing comparisons,
reviews and articles, we
regretfully
request YOUR
assistance in the form of small
monthly donations. We have started a
Patreon page with the hopes that
some of our followers would be
willing to donate to keep DVDBeaver
alive. We are a small niche, so your
generosity is vital to our
existence. |

directed by Robert Altman
US/UK/Italy 2001
TEA AT FOUR. DINNER AT EIGHT. MURDER AT MIDNIGHT. In 2001, Robert Altman (M*A*S*H,
The Long Goodbye) took the unexpected step into
Agatha Christie territory with Gosford Park, a
murder-mystery whodunit set in an English country house
starring a host of British acting greats and with an
Oscar-winning screenplay by Downton Abbey creator
Julian Fellowes. It would become a huge success with
audiences and critics alike. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. Arrow have transferred Robert Altman's Gosford Park to Blu-ray for both the UK and North American markets. It is advertised as a " Brand new 2K restoration from a 4K scan, carried out by Arrow films exclusively for this release, supervised and approved by director of photography Andrew Dunn" and it looks impressive. the 2002 DVD have a very green look to it and this has been replaced by more accurate colors, earthy browns and richer primary colors in the new 1080P transfer. Skin tones appear more natural and the image is typically Altman-heavy in the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. It looks very pleasing in-motion - lots of diffused lighting and the visuals are extremely film-like.The audio gives the option of a robust DTS-HD Master 5.1 (24-bit) track - although the film has few separation requirements - or a stereo linear PCM. The former, obviously carries more depth but that would only be notable in the score by Patrick Doyle ( Henry V, Nim's Island, Alfonso Cuarón's excellent Great Expectations, Brian De Palma's Carlito's Way, and the 2011 version of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, among his credits). Dialogue is audible, not as intentionally scattered as in some of Altman's other films. Arrow offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.Arrow stack the Blu-ray with all the extras from the previous 2002 DVD (the audio commentaries by director Robert Altman, production designer Stephen Altman and producer David Levy and a second by writer-producer Julian Fellowes plus the 20-minute The Making of Gosford Park featurette, the 9-minute Keeping Gosford Park Authentic video piece, a 25-minute Q&A Session with Altman and the cast plus fifteen deleted scenes with optional Altman commentary and a trailer.) What is additional courtesy of Arrow, are a brand-new audio commentary by critics Geoff Andrew and David Thompson (author of Altman on Altman) who delves deeply into the director and his style. There are also brand new cast and crew interviews recorded for this Blu-ray; with Executive Producer Jane Barclay for 20:46 and actress Natasha Wightman (who plays Lavinia Meredith) for 11-minutes. The package itself has a reversible sleeves featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Matthew Griffin plus the first pressing purchasers receive and illustrated collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film by critic Sheila O'Malley and an archive interview with Robert Altman. Altman fans don't require much encouragement. He makes films that seem to improve through repeat viewings. A master craftsman and this delightful murder-mystery is a gem - treated royally by Arrow in this must-own, triple-commentary, Blu-ray package. |
