(aka 'Interference' or 'La Vie Facile')
1949
Scripted by Charles Schnee (The Bad and the Beautiful, Two Weeks in Another Town) from an Irwin Shaw story, this might have been another Sweet Smell of Success with a lowdown angle on professional sport. Tourneur does his best (always concisely, sometimes brilliantly) as Mature's ageing football star gambles his life to ensure security while his wife (Scott) turns the screw on his troubles by ruthlessly pursuing fame as a designer. But studio interference and script compromises (notably in begging the question of whether the wife screws her way to success, and in treating her ambitions with routine bias) sugar the sourness. |

Comments: |
A typical Montparnasse edition looking a bit thin with weak, and boosted, contrast. It's from a probable analog source. It seems a notch superior than we have seen from them with some better-than-average shadow detail. Still though single-layered and there is some very minor combing.
Once again
no sign of this RKO effort landing in the region 1 calendar. We have
original English audio or optional French subtitles and a French DUB. No extras save the
mono-brow Bromberg's 3 minute introduction (in French only).
I don't believe this is out anywhere else - making the
Montparnasse the only game it town.
Well, Tourneur helming Mature, Lizabeth Scott, Lucille Ball
and Lloyd Nolan... As a sports movie it has
some obtuse moments but I reveled in the performances and tight
direction. It's no masterpiece but for the price and cast appeal I'd say
it's worth it.
