(aka "Parfum de printemps" or "Zizou" or "Zizou and the Arab Spring")

Directed by Férid Boughedir
France | Lebanon | Tunisia 2016

Férid Boughedir (Halfaouine, A Summer in La Goulette) charmingly pulls off a lighthearted comedic fable about, of all things, the 2011 Arab Spring uprising in Tunisia. This year we’re treating the Friends of the Film Festival to the sweet story of Zizou, a naive and sincere optimist whose crush on a beautiful girl leads him to become the unwitting face of a revolution. With two years of university under his belt, but very little common sense, Zizou leaves his Saharan village and finds work in the big city of Tunis, installing satellite dishes alongside a colorful cast of characters. The job takes him to every part of the city, introducing him to residents ranging from supporters of the regime and underground rebels to a ravishing beauty being held captive by the mafia. When Zizou decides to attempt a rescue of his beloved, he gets much more than he bargained for, and a case of mistaken identity lands him in the forefront of a national rebellion. This delightful movie will win you over with its bewitching story set against the gorgeous backdrop of a colorful Tunisia as it attempts to become the first true democracy in North Africa.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Kino Lorber bring Férid Boughedir's dramedy "Zizou and the Arab Spring" (aka "Parfum de Printemps") to a single-layered Blu-ray with a modest bitrate. The 1.85:1 HD image shows some nice detail, though is a bit pixelated when zoomed in, most likely due to the film's digital roots (I'm assuming this was shot digitally). The desert vistas show a wide range of colors, let alone the more vivid city scenes. Contrast levels are also decent, showing certain details in nighttime shots and dark interiors, without crushing blacks. Despite the low bitrate, the film looks fine in motion.

The film has the option of either 24-bit 5.1 or 2.0 French and Arabic language track. Both tracks feature clearly audible and intelligible dialogue, as well as great music from Cyril Morin and Kaies Sellami. There are optional English and French subtitles on this Region 'A'
Blu-ray from Kino.

Kino have included a few extras on their
Blu-ray, starting with 6-minutes of excerpts from an interview with filmmaker Férid Boughedir at the Cannes Film Festival. Up next is 4-minutes of deleted scenes, a 6-minute "Making-of" featurette, a 2-minute photo gallery of behind the scenes footage of the cast and crew, and the film's trailer.

"Zizou and the Arab Spring" is an interesting light-hearted take on a very serious moment in history. Director Férid Boughedir is clearly talented though certain moments have a little too much soap-opera drama for my taste. Kino have a nice
Blu-ray release and I would recommend to any curious world cinema viewers.
