(aka "The Desert Bride" )
directed by Cecilia Atán, Valeria Pivato
Argentina/Chile 2017
When her longtime employers decide to sell their home and let her go, middle-aged Teresa (Paulina García, LITTLE MEN) takes a position with another family to which she has been recommended. When the bus she is taking to San Juan breaks down at a local shrine, she is given a hard sell by vendor Miguel (Claudio Rissi) - also known as "El Gringo" - so she steps into his van to try on a garment. When a torrential storm comes in suddenly, Miguel and the other vendors pack up and leave, and Teresa discovers that she has left her bag in his van. After spending the night at the shrine, Teresa manages to track down Miguel but not her bag which he says he may have inadvertently dropped off at one of the warehouses of his suppliers. Retracing his drive, Teresa and Miguel get to know each other - Teresa more so of Miguel when they stop by to visit his father - but Teresa is wary of closeness (flashbacks show that her son and his new family have little time for her). When Teresa discovers that Miguel has been delaying them going their separate ways through manipulation, Teresa must decide whether taking a chance on love is worth the risk. A rather over-familiar and loosely-plotted scenario is enlivened by moving but understated performances of leads Garcia and Rissi. |

Strand Releasing affords a strong high-bitrate, dual-layer encode to a film of this brevity. The extra-wide 2.60:1 aspect ratio (presumably an anamorphic adapter used on a 16:9 sensor) means an emphasis on wide shots with the camera never getting too close to the actors for fear of unflattering distortion (and what close-ups there are are dead-center). Although the film is intimate in scope, the Dolby Digital 5.1 track utilizes the surrounds nicely for atmosphere. Optional English subtitles are free of any glaring errors. There are no extras but the film's trailer and other trailers. |
