Directed by R.G. Springsteen
USA 1970
The final directorial effort by veteran filmmaker R.G. Springsteen (Singing Guns). A Vietnam War veteran (Christopher George, Day of the Animals) returns home to restore his relationship with his estranged brother (Dennis Patrick, TV’s Dark Shadows), a principal shareholder of a California racetrack. Upon arrival, he discovers that his brother has been murdered during a robbery. After being framed for his brother’s murder, he looks up his old flame (Tippi Hedren, The Birds) to assist him in solving the robbery and murder. The ex-lovers are now caught in the callous greed of corrupt and vicious shareholders responsible for the cover-up and his brother’s murder. The stellar cast includes Dean Jagger (Rawhide), Lloyd Bochner (Point Blank), Skip Homeier (The Gunfighter), R.G. Armstrong (White Lightning), John Dehner (Support Your Local Gunfighter), Alan Hale Jr. (TV’s Gilligan’s Island) and introducing Charo (TV’s Chico and the Man). |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.ADDITION: (July 2018) Kino - Region 'A' - Blu-ray: This is described as a "Brand New HD Master – From a 4K Scan of the 35mm Safety Dupe Negative by Paramount Pictures", although the source looks as modest as the production with a few speckles and some softness. It's on a single-layered Blu-ray, but looks consistent in-motion although never dynamic or crisp. Colors have some depth. It does look acceptable without artifacts or severe damage of any find. It's a fairly empty crime-drama but has an interesting cast. Audio is transferred in DTS-HD Master (16-bit) in 2.0 channel. There aren't an abundance of aggressive effects - an early fistfight and some gunplay but has a competent score by Joe Greene (The Girl Who Knew Too Much) which added a bit of drama here and there. We should also mention Charo's song Let's Drink, Friend written by her and her husband Xavier Cugat. There are no subtitles and the Blu-ray disc is Region 'A'-locked. Supplements include an audio commentary by Howard S. Berger and Nathaniel Thompson who discus the film's attributes but comparing it to reading a pulp novel off the stand with some titillation in writhing Charo and bikini-clad Tippi. It's fun to follow along with. There are also trailers for 4 others films. Tiger By the Tail has a surprising cast with George, Tippi and some recognizable support (Dean Jagger, R.G. Armstrong, Lloyd Bochner, Skip Homeier, Alan Hale Jr.) plus, pop-culture celebrity, Charo in her first, bona-fide, English-language feature. As stated in the commentary for the actors involved - this was, mostly, just a paycheck. I wouldn't say I disliked it but it was a weak production including a less-satisfying script, sets, pacing etc.. I was however, curious to see it. Now I have. |
