As devout Jehovah's Witnesses, sisters Alex and
Luisa and their mother, Ivanna, are united in The Truth. Alex
looks up to her confident older sister, while striving to follow in
Ivanna's footsteps as a ‘good Witness'. But when Luisa starts to
question the advice of the Elders, she makes a life-altering
transgression that threatens to expel her from the congregation.
Unless Ivanna and Alex can persuade her to return, they must shun
her completely. This challenge becomes more painful when their
family is faced with another heartbreaking test of faith. Written
and directed by Daniel Kokotajlo, a former Jehovah’s Witness,
Apostasy is a remarkable debut film, providing rare authenticity
and insight into faith, family, duty and love. *** Written and directed by Daniel Kokotajlo, a former Jehovah's Witness, APOSTASY is a remarkable and authentic debut film, providing rare insight into the complex nature of faith, family, duty and love. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.ADDITION: (September 2018) Artificial Eye - Region 'B' - Blu-ray: Curzon Artificial Eye bring us Daniel Kokotajlo's "Apostasy" on a dual-layered Blu-ray. The unique but effective 1.50:1 image has a high bitrate, and looks very pleasing in motion. The detail level is impressive here, especially in tight close-ups on faces. The overall image is somewhat muted which we assume was an intentional appearance. The contrast levels are also decent which is good considering the amount of darker scenes. Colors are somewhat muted but this is not a fault of the Blu-ray, and is more likely the director's intention. The Artificial Eye Blu-ray has the option of a robust DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround audio track or a linear PCM Stereo transfer (both 24-bit) - both in the original Urdu language. There is a contemplative score by Matthew Wilcock (who has done many shorts and a few features in his career) suiting the film's dour, repressive, atmosphere. There are optional English subtitles for the hard of hearing on this Region 'B'-locked Blu-ray. Artificial Eye have provided good supplements starting with a feature-length audio commentary with writer/director Daniel Kokotajlo & actress Sacha Parkinson. Though there are some quiet moments, the two have great chemistry and provide plentiful insight into the making of the film. There is also a 28-minute interview with the cast members of the film. There are 9-minutes of deleted and extended-scenes and there is an "Above the Scenes" featurette showing the making of Apostasy at two of the film's most memorable locations. Also included here is the film's trailer. Apostasy is a difficult film that touches on some touchy subject matter, though in a thoughtful and respectful way. Daniel Kokotajlo is certainly a director to keep watching. Artificial Eye present the film on Blu-ray with no flaws in the picture, and with different audio options and some valuable supplements including a commentary. An interesting film, though melancholy but layered and a remarkable debut. Recommended! |
