Hawks and Sparrows (1966) aka Uccellacci e uccellini
Oedipus Rex (1967) aka Edipo re
Pigsty (1969) aka Porcile
In “Pier Paolo Pasolini
volume 2”, Tartan has chosen three significant films by Pasolini, which show
his approach to certain themes and motifs, here especially the use of medieval
past and contemporary pretence as reflecting and elaborating qualities, and his
progressive use of these.
The box contains of three films, each in a slimcase with the films original
poster design used as cover, and a reprint of Pasolini’s 1955 novel, The Ragazzi.
(aka "Hawks and Sparrows" )
directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini
Italy 1960
In this post neo-realism fable, Pasolini tells the story of an old man and his son, who on their journey meet a crow, who transports them back to the times of St. Francis, where they have to teach Hawks and Sparrows of the love of God. Having succeeded, but failed in making them love each other, they return to their own time, where the crow continues to give them intellectual lectures. In the end, the old man and his son satisfy their own needs by a prostitute and in the end by eating the crow.

While details are sharp and blacks deep,
there are minute compression artifacts visible, especially colour
banding in the greys. However, during normal play, these artifacts
aren't visible, and the presentation is strong and clear. Sound is original mono. Dialogue is clear and it is free of any noise. Additional material consists of Pasolini's rare award winning short "Appunti per un film sull'India" from 1968 in OAR 1.33:1. |

(aka "Oedipus Rex" )
directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini
Italy 1967
In “Oedipus Rex”, Pasolini reinvents Oedipus, who still guided by fate, no longer is a man of wits later haunted by hubris, but a primitive man, a coward who cheats to win. He first chickens out facing his father – unknown to him – later killing him like a pig by slitting his throat, and he doesn’t outwit the Sphinx, but thru brute force. In the end, he is transported to modern times, now blind, playing his flute beneath a cathedral and later a factory.

(aka "Pigsty" )
directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini
Italy 1969
Pasolini invites us for a reflecting view on the human capacity of destruction with “Pigsty”. In the first of the two interweaving stories, we follow a young man, in a timeless volcanic land, who joins a band of bandits and turn to rape, murder and cannibalism. The second story takes place in Germany in the early sixties and deals with the German industrialist Herr Klotz’, and how he joins forces with his rival, and Klotz’ son Julian, who prefers to have sex with pigs rather than with his fiancée, and in the end gets eaten by pigs.
