Directed by Michael Radford
Italy 1994
Telling the fictional story of the
real-life Nobel laureate poet Pablo Neruda's exile to a tiny island
off Italy where, being a high-profile figure, he receives such huge
quantities of mail that the local post office must hire an extra
postman: Il Postino. Though shy and poorly educated, our
postman (Massimo Troisi) is so intrigued by Neruda (Philippe Noiret
- of
Cinema Paradiso) that he devises ploys to engage the
attention of the great poet. The unlikely duo become friends as
Neruda is charmed by the fresh simplicity of the postman whose love
for poetry he then uses to woo local beauty, Beatrice (Maria Grazia
Cucinotta - of Bond
The World is Not Enough). |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.ADDITION: (October 2018) Cult Films - Region 'B' - Blu-ray: After Cult Films 1080i Juliet of the Spirits Blu-ray world cinema fans were curious on how Il Postino would be transferred. I'm happy to say this is 1080P on a dual-layered disc with a high bitrate. It often looks very good and occasionally modest but I think the HD image is pleasing with grain texture and minor scanner noise. The visuals show solid detail, infrequent depth and true, tight colors, Overall, I would consider it a success after the inconsistencies of Juliet of the Spirits. Cult Films gives us the choice of watching "Il Postino" with a 16-bit linear PCM 2.0 track in the original Italian language. Few effects but the score is by Luis Bacalov (Seduction, A Bullet for the General, Shoot First, Die Later, Django Unchained, City of Women) also featuring Carlos Gardel's Madreselva and it sounds clean and crisp in the lossless. There are optional English subtitles on this Region-B locked Blu-ray. Cult Films add the supplement of a 3/4 hour newly produced candid interview with director Michael Radford (Flawless). He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for the 1994 film Il Postino. He was born in New Delhi, India and is also famous for the film Nineteen Eighty-Four , with John Hurt and Richard Burton, and is notable also s the screenwriter credit of Il Postino. Il Postino is a brilliant and beautiful drama that deserves to be called a masterpiece. It has impressive cinematography by Franco di Giacomo and effectively subtle use of Neruda's poetry. What a great film that was a pleasure to see in HD. We recommend this Blu-ray. |
