(aka "Princesses" )

directed by Fernando Leon de Aranoa

Mr. Aranoa is good with actors but lousy with ideas, though he broaches themes of class conflict and the economic basis of racism. His best material observes the rivalry between a clique of native working girls and the dark-skinned streetwalkers newly arrived on the scene. Otherwise, Princesas rehearses “hooker with a heart of gold” tropes and indulges Almodóvarian clichés of Spanish spunk and solidarity.

Comments:

Video:
While the 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is generally free of compression artifacts and print damage, the picture quality is average at best. It looks like the movie was shot with low-grade, heavily grainy film stock, and colors are muted and dull. The video lacks detail and is frequently so soft that sudden motion is heavily blurred. The video may be an interlaced transfer as I saw quite a bit of ghosting.

Audio:
The Dolby Digital 5.1 Spanish audio track fares better than the video. Dialogue is always clear and intelligible, and lively music envelopes the room. There are even a couple of impressive bass extensions during outdoors scenes.

Optional English and Spanish subtitles support the audio.

Extras:
There are two brief deleted scenes. “The Making of Princesas” is a compilation of behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with members of the cast and crew. You also get a music video as well as the movie’s trailer.

Finally, there are previews of other Genius-Products titles.
