After the death of her father, teenager Leah (Nicole Muņoz, PATHFINDER) has sought escape in the occult along and a close circle of friends: goth Rob (Romeo Carere), love interest Aaron (DEGRASSI HIGH's Eric Osborne), and best friend Janice (Chloe Rose). When her mother (Laurie Holden, THE MIST), who has been having her own difficulties dealing with her loss, decides to uproot her for a change in surroundings, Leah is devastated. When her upset mother disparages her friends and her beliefs, and then says something unforgivable in the heat of the moment, Leah wishes her dead and conducts a ritual summoning Pyewacket to do her bidding as a way of venting. Just as her relationship with her mother starts to improve, Leah starts hearing strange noises in the house and wakes up in the woods at the site of her ritual. Fearing that the spell has worked, she confides in her friends who cannot believe she would be so cold as to wish her mother dead and think she is just trying to get attention until fascinated Janice makes the mistake of spending the night. She then appeals to occult writer Rowan Dove (THE BORDER's James McGowan) who provides instructions to undo the ritual but also warns her that Pyewacket can take many forms and not to believe her lying eyes. A lowkey Canadian horror film, PYEWACKET really does nothing new technically or even narratively, but Muņoz and Holden hold our interest and the possibility of a teenage schizophrenic break seems just as likely as the supernatural in a story with a strong emotional core and a shocking climax.

Comments

Signature Entertainment gives a serviceable presentation to a digitally-lensed film, the brevity of which allows for a high-bitrate encode to the anamorphic video with a 5.1 surround track and perfectly workable 2.0 stereo downmix. Optional English HoH subtitles are provided. The interview featurette includes comments by the director and female leads, with Holden providing much more backstory for her character than afforded by the film while some of Muņoz's comments also suggest some details that did not make the final cut. The behind the scenes segment covers the stuntwork for the fire sequence.
