(aka "The Deadly and the Beautiful" )

directed by Robert Vincent O'Neill
Philippines/USA 1973

Martial arts madness, dangerous chase scenes, insult-heavy dialogue, vague sci-fi twists, and a whole lot more nudity and violence than its very misleading PG rating would imply. Robert Vincent O’Neill’s WONDER WOMEN is a quintessential slice of early 70s drive-in craziness, featuring supporting performances from Roberta Collins, Sid Haig and Filipino exploitation stalwart Vic Diaz.

While traveling to Australia, American detective Mike Harber (Ross Hagen) finds himself stranded in The Philippines and obliged to assist in solving the mysterious disappearance of a famous Jai alai athlete. After hearing from a witness that the man might have been kidnapped by a group of beautiful, hearse driving women, Mike quickly finds himself a new target of the Wonder Women, a group of martial arts fighting assassins who work for the mysterious Dr. Tsu (Nancy Kwan); an evil genius scientist who’s been collecting able-bodied men for use in her bizarre body part transplant experiments!

Vinegar Syndrome is pleased to bring this eye-poppingly colorful B movie classic to Blu-ray, newly restored from its original 35mm camera negative and featuring both its original domestic theatrical version as well as the complete, never-on-disc extended European cut!

Comments

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Vinegar Syndrome present 1973's "Wonder Women" on a dual-layered Blu-ray. This is a newly scanned and restored (in 2k) image from the 35mm camera negative. The film is presented in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio and the image quality is a huge jump over the previously available DVD. There is also the option of watching the film in its longer "European Version" (90 mins vs. 82 mins). The amount of detail in the image is abundant, as Vinegar Syndrome continue to impress with their transfers. There is a fair amount of grain and the image quality can waver from scene to scene, but this is most likely due to the film stock used during production.

First off, the music in "Wonder Women" is quite catchy. The funky wah-wah music is all over the picture. Vinegar Syndrome present the film in 24-bit DTS-HD 1.0 mono and it sounds pretty decent for a film of its time. There are the occasional hisses and pops but this just adds to the Grindhouse nature of the film. Dialogue is clearly heard and the music sounds great. There are optional English SDH subtitles on this Region-Free
Blu-ray.

Vinegar Syndrome have quite a few neat extras for this cult film on their
Blu-ray release. Joe Ruben from Vinegar interviewing director Robert Vincent O’Neill. This is a very interesting commentary, with O'Neill able to recall very specific facts about the production of the film, whether it be the budget, location scouting, casting, etc. He even remembers his original titles for the film, "The Chinese Puzzle", "The Deadly and the Beautiful", though "Wonder Women" surely would have been the optimal title, it was met with litigation and the film was briefly held back from release. Great commentary track for fans of the film. It should be noted that this track is only available on the main cut, not the longer European version. There is also a 12-minute excerpt from a Q and A at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles with Robert Vincent O’Neill, Nancy Kwan, Ross Hagen, Roberta Collins and Sid Haig. The image quality is poor here, but the audio is easy to decipher, and this is a fun and laid back Q and A. There is also a trailer for the film included here, as well as TV spots. There is a promotional still gallery and reversible cover artwork. A second disc DVD is included.

Wonder Women is just another example of a
Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome curatorially knocking it out of the park. The film is a fun and silly everything-but-the-kitchen-sink kind of exploitation film. There is a mad scientist, a prison (shot in the Philippines no less), guns, girls in bikinis, cock fighting, you name it! The transfer is quite good and the commentary is well worth your time. Highly recommended!
