Virginia McKenna stars alongside Oscar winner Peter Finch in this acclaimed adaptation of Nevil Shute's moving novel. Winning multiple awards (including BAFTAs for both McKenna and Finch), A Town Like Alice is featured here in a brand-new High Definition transfer from original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.

Jean Paget, an English woman taken prisoner by the Japanese, is among a group of women and children forced to trek through Malaya during the occupation. During her ordeal she meets captive Australian Joe Harman and there is an instant magnetism between them; as they talk, Jean learns about Joe's hometown of Alice Springs, and his hope of returning there one day.

To relieve the suffering of the women and children, Joe steals some chickens from the sadistic Captain Sugaya, but when he is caught Sugaya orders Joe to be executed in front of Jean and the others...

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: (November 2018) Network - Region  'B' - Blu-ray: Network presents "A Town Like Alice" on a single-layer Blu-ray disc. The 1.66:1 image is held with a modest bitrate. The image quality is decent, though the grain could be finer. The rather thick blotchy grain does give the film a softer look, detail-wise. There are also multiple instances of vertical scratches. The contrast levels are nice though, with a healthy range of blacks and greys. The film looks good in motion, proving this to be a satisfactory transfer.

Network have included the film's 2.0 linear PCM mono soundtrack. Though it can sound a bit flat, dialogue is clearly audible. The music from Matyas Seiber is clearly audible as well. There are optional English subtitles on this Region-B
Blu-ray.

Network has padded out this
Blu-ray with a handful of interesting archival extras. "A Profile of A Town Like Alice" is a 24-minute documentary with the cast and crew covering the production of the film. We are also treated to two interviews, the first is a 13.5-minute interview with Peter Finch, the second being a 5.5-minute interview with Virginia McKenna. Included here is the film's theatrical trailer and an image gallery.

From the novel by Nevil Shute (On the Beach), "A Town Like Alice" comes to Region-B on this
Blu-ray from Network. Though the image isn't anywhere near reference quality, it is far from a disaster. Would recommend this Blu-ray to fans of the film.
