OUR REVIEW
COMMENTS: Universal's 4K UHD release of James Whale's "Bride of Frankenstein" is one of the more desired titles for vintage horror fans - it is often considered one of the greatest sequels ever made. It goes beyond Whale's own Frankenstein from 1931 which also stars Boris Karloff as 'the Monster'. It realizes a subplot from Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein: Or The Modern Prometheus; Henry Frankenstein is coerced by his mentor Dr. Pretorius into constructing a mate for his first creation. Elsa Lanchester stars in the dual role of Mary Shelley and "The Bride". It is frequently sited as Whale's masterpiece and an improvement on the original film. The manner that the 4K handles the ominous darkness and film grain add an effective fresh layer to the viewing. It significantly augments the horror aspects in shadow - the stormy night, the blind hermit's abode, the crypt, the lightening and, of course, the torch-lit laboratory. I compare seeing the Bride's iconic bandage-wrapped body in 4K to the opening of Vertigo in this format. A new, awesome, impression of exemplary film images. This is a must-own.

OUR REVIEW
COMMENTS: Universal's 4K UHD release of Jack Arnold's Creature from the Black Lagoon is another pleasing video upgrade. Scientists discover a piscine amphibious humanoid in the waters of the Amazon river. William Alland wrote story notes titled "The Sea Monster" using Beauty and the Beast as inspiration after he had heard, many years earlier, of the myth of a race of half-fish, half-human creatures in South America. The "Gill Man" spawned (figuratively) two sequels; Revenge of the Creature (1955) and The Creature Walks Among Us (1956.) The 2017 film The Shape of Water was partly inspired by Guillermo del Toro's childhood memories of Creature from the Black Lagoon. In 2020, Universal was considering Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans for a remake. The original has a loyal fanbase embracing it as a quintessential 50's creature-feature... with just the right amount of cheesy-ness. It sports a very recognizable cast with Richard Carlson, Julie Adams, Richard Denning, Whit Bissell... For many Creature from the Black Lagoon is a must own in the best possible video format. Well, this is easily it.

COMMENTS: Juanma Bajo Ulloa's The Dead Mother offers quite a fascinating and unique story. Wikipedia describes that this film "contributed to the creation of an aura of cult auteur around the director." I can understand why. The lead character is a nasty sociopathic criminal. I can't recall the number of people he head-butted people in the film. The Dead Mother is shocking at times, but never exploitive. What evolves is a connection between the violent Ismael and emotionally damaged Leire (Ana Alvarez) that appears to lead to a redemption for Ismael. No question this is a memorable film and a great choice for Radiance Films to bring to Blu-ray. The package is stacked from a director commentary, short film, booklet, CD and more. Certainly recommended!

OUR REVIEW
COMMENTS: The Criterion edition does not have the accoutrements of the StudioCanal 4K UHD, however it is still a magnificent edition - fully worthy of a double-dip if you had the older Blu-ray. My feelings on Don't Look Now have not changed - it is such a deep film experience that you can get something new out of each time you view it. It has parental bereavement issues, mystery and horror elements and is so underplayed at times that it keeps you at a very high level of suspense. As the extras can testify Roeg's 'language of color' is brilliant and unique - remaining an integral part of the narrative. The 4K UHD image is out-of-this-world and there are new highly valuable extras. It couldn't happen to a more relevant film. This is one of my absolute favorite 4K UHD packages to date. I imagine all the greatest cinema getting this overwhelming treatment - Antonioni, Bresson, more stylistic Giallo (of which, Don't Look Now does have links) etc. etc.. There can be no excuse for Home theater aficionados not to have this in a coveted part of their digital library.

COMMENTS: Based on a story by acclaimed writer Ray Bradbury, It Came from Outer Space starring Richard Carlson and Barbara Rush is a science fiction classic that is as thought-provoking and tantalizing today as it was when it first "landed" on the silver screen. When amateur astronomer John Putnam (Carlson) and his fiancée Ellen Fields (Rush) are stargazing in the desert, a spaceship bursts from the sky and crashes to the ground. Just before a landslide buries the ship, a mysterious creature emerges and disappears into the darkness. Of course, when he tells his story to the sheriff (Charles Drake), John is branded a crackpot. Before long, strange things begin to happen, but will the tide of disbelief turn in time?

COMMENTS: Lorenza Mazzetti arrived in London from Italy in 1951, survivor of a wartime atrocity in which her Jewish relatives were murdered; she quickly made friends with other artists in a new and different world. Though associated with the realist Free Cinema movement, her stark yet playful films - all shot on location in the capital’s bomb-devastated, smog-caked vistas - take the form of psychodramas, influenced by Kafka’s bleak absurdity, the horrors she had endured, and the agony she faced missing her twin sister back home. This new set includes Mazzetti’s three deeply poetic, avant-garde, narrative London works, all newly remastered by the BFI National Archive, plus a brand new feature-length documentary.

**Karl Freund's "The Mummy" 4K UHD** - Boris Karloff / Zita Johann
US PURCHASE LINK
CANADIAN PURCHASE LINK
COMMENTS: Universal's 4K UHD release of 1932's The Mummy has Karloff's Imhotep (assimilated into the modern guise of Ardeth Bey) embodying the stuff of film legend. We are exposed to hieroglyphic symbols, a restless sarcophagus, reincarnation, supernatural punishment for sacrilege, hypnotic spells, ancient flashbacks, a Nubian slave, and the goddess Isis to the rescue. The Mummy pioneered the way to many eventual sequels, spin-offs, and remakes. It is Pre-Code with slinky Zita Johann's gowns edging to racy, but it's really about Karloff 'The Uncanny's transformative make-up and penetrating gaze. Inspired by the opening of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, The Mummy, directed by Karl Freund (the cinematographer on Dracula,) remains the wonderful primordial soup for mummy-themed films in perpetuity. Another must-own classic from the Universal's 4K UHD Monsters: Icons of Horror Collection (Part 2.) No hesitation in purchasing required.

COMMENTS: Academy Award® winner Nicole Kidman (Best Actress, The Hours, 2003) delivers an unforgettable performance in this gothic supernatural thriller. In 1945, Grace (Kidman) and her two children wait for her husband's return from the war, living an unusually isolated existence behind the locked doors and drawn curtains of a secluded mansion in Jersey. Three mysterious new servants arrive and it becomes chillingly clear that there is far more to this house than can be seen, and Grace finds herself in a terrifying fight to save her children and preserve her sanity. Acclaimed by critics, the unpredictable twists and turns of this compelling psychological horror classic will keep you on the edge of your seat.

COMMENTS: One of the most popular stories of all time, Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera is the legendary horror tale starring Claude Rains as the masked phantom of the Paris Opera House. Following a tragic accident that leaves him disfigured, crazed composer Erique Claudin transforms into a masked phantom who schemes to make beautiful young soprano Christine Dubois (Susanna Foster) the star of the opera and wreak revenge on those who stole his music. A heroic baritone (Nelson Eddy) tries to win the affections of Christine as he tracks down the disfigured "monster" who has begun murdering those who resist his mad demands. Inspired by the original 1925 silent version, this lavish Technicolor production remains one of the most unforgettable adaptations ever to be filmed.

COMMENTS: Paramount's 4K UHD release of Roman Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby" is greatly anticipated my cinema fans. The film was based on Ira Levin's 1967 novel. Discussed for the role, that eventually went to Mia Farrow, were Tuesday Weld, Jane Fonda, Patty Duke, Goldie Hawn and Polanski's fiancée Sharon Tate. Midway through shooting the film, Frank Sinatra, Farrow's husband, served her with divorce papers (via a lawyer) intentionally infront of the cast and crew. "Rosemary's Baby" remains a key psychological horror with multiple themes like anxiety, paranoia, occultism, Catholicism / Satanism / Witchcraft, and even women's lib. It's easy to notice Charles Grodin (in his debut role) as Dr. Hill but keep your eyes peeled and you may see Tony Curtis, Patricia O'Neal, and Sharon Tate (party guest.) I love clues like "The name is an anagram". This is definitely a film you want in the best possible home theatre presentation and despite the lack of new extras - this 4K UHD is it.

COMMENTS: I have always enjoy watching Peter Weir's The Last Wave. There was a keen augmented feature seeing it in 4K UHD. It is such a curious, haunting, supernatural thriller and existential horror containing apocalyptic weather phenomena and mythical connections. David Burton's (Chamberlain) sedate and 'normal' family life is turned upside down by forces he logically tries to reject... until his dreams cannot be denied. Weir has filled the film with many cultural reference points and shrouded mystery throughout. It seems to evoke similar themes of Colin Eggleston's Ozploitation classic Long Weekend. - another strongly recommended Australian film. The Last Wave is really quite brilliant and I enjoyed the 1080P, lossless audio (still LOVE the spooky soundtrack) and new commentary is a bonus plus the interviews, booklet and other accouterments. World cinephiles who appreciate the film may wish to indulge in this stacked package.

Both films show the seedier side of French culture; sex workers, strippers, drug addicts, grimy club musicians, gangsters etc. Themes deal with betrayal, survival, death, ex-con... La garce has more police thriller attributes - which I appreciated. This Fun City Edition Blu-ray has a great pairing of French crime films with two notable female stars. Recommended!

COMMENTS: John Frankenheimer's The Train is loosely based on the Rose Valland's fact-based book Le front de l'art published in 1961. Curator of the Jeu de Paume Museum, Mademoiselle Villard (Suzanne Flon), with help from the French Resistance, attempts to thwart priceless modern art masterpieces being stolen and shipped, by train, to Nazi Germany in August 1944. Artworks seen in the film were by Paul Gauguin and Pablo Picasso. Lancaster fired director Arthur Penn after three days of filming in France, requesting Frankenheimer take over. Frankenheimer used this scattered production to his negotiational advantage getting his name made part of the title ("John Frankenheimer's The Train"), totally set removal or input from the French co-director demanded by French tax laws (actually producer Bernard Farrel,) he was given total final cut as well as a Ferrari (see John Frankenheimer: A Conversation With Charles Champlin.) The Kino 4K UHD has this exceptional Frankenheimer-Lancaster film looking and sounding its best and they even add a few extras beyond their 2021 Blu-ray. The two commentaries and isolated score remain. The Train is an excellent WW2 thriller packed with great performances and action. Certainly recommended.
