ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I liked everything this week (listed directly below) - but had some reservations over Shout! Factory's Blu-ray of David Cronenberg's Dead Ringers. Briefly, The Quiet Earth , on Blu-ray, was a thought-provoking apocalypse tale. Ousmane Sembčne's Black Girl remains engrossing and impacting, Stardust Memories one of Allen's best, Fritz Lang's Western Union is full of western-lore adventure - The Undying Monster represents vintage horror while Kurosaw's Creepy is modern chills at their best, and Doc Savage - The Man of Bronze has young boy's hero-yarn chock-full of nostalgia. On DVD we compared the Universal SD of the Essential Noir So Evil My Love.

"Christmas gives us the opportunity to pause and reflect on the important things around us - a time when we can look back on the year that has passed and prepare for the year ahead.”

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Black Girl BD - Ousmane Sembčne was one of the greatest and most groundbreaking filmmakers who ever lived, as well as the most renowned African director of the twentieth century—and yet his name still deserves to be better known in the rest of the world. He made his feature debut in 1966 with the brilliant and stirring Black Girl. Sembčne, who was also an acclaimed novelist in his native Senegal, transforms a deceptively simple plot—about a young Senegalese woman who moves to France to work for a wealthy white family and finds that life in their small apartment becomes a prison, both figuratively and literally—into a complexly layered critique of the lingering colonialist mind-set of a supposedly postcolonial world. Featuring a moving central performance by M’Bissine Thérčse Diop, Black Girl is a harrowing human drama as well as a radical political statement—and one of the essential films of the 1960s. Criterion Blu-ray Release Date: January 24th, 2016

The Quiet Earth BD - In a tour-de-force sci-fi story with only three main characters, Kiwi director Geoffrey Murphy creates an interesting dynamic nuanced with shades of mysticism. When scientist Zac Hobson (Bruno Lawrence) experiments with a radical new power source -- a band of energy that would circle the planet -- the project goes awry and apparently wipes out all living creatures (they vanish without a trace). At first Zac adjusts by indulging himself in some of his materialistic desires, but he soon starts a serious search for other signs of human life. He discovers it in New Zealand in the form of Joanne (Alison Routledge), with whom he falls in love, and Api (Peter Smith), a Maori. The challenges the three face in order to survive, as well as their personal interactions, keep this human drama engrossing. Blu-ray Release date: December 6th, 2016

Stardust Memories (Twilight Time added) BD - Sandy Bates (Allen) is not only tired of being funny, he may even be teetering on the brink of a nervous breakdown. At a retrospective of his films, in between toe-curlingly stupid questions from his audiences, he's forced to confront not only the meaning of his work but also past and present relationships with Dorrie (Charlotte Rampling), Daisy (Jessica Harper) and Isobel (Marie-Christine Barrault). Plagued by hallucinations, alien visitations and philistine studio executives trying to change his bleak new film into something more conventionally crowd-pleasing, Sandy struggles to find a reason to go on living. Blu-ray Release Date: December, 2016

Doc Savage - The Man of Bronze BD - Based on the first of Kenneth Robeson’s 181 adventure-packed Doc Savage books, Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze hits the screen with all its gee-whiz, gung-ho spirit intact. And its bold protagonist, who along with having a herculean body is also a surgeon, linguist and inventor, remains determined to do right to all and wrong to no one. Ron Ely (TV’s Tarzan) plays the strapping Savage in this high-camp, big-heroics tale of his trek into the Valley of the Vanished to confront the power-hungry Captain Seas (Paul Wexler). Blu-ray Release Date: November 1st, 2016

The Undying Monster BD - A curse hangs over the ancestral home of the Hammonds. These English toffs are all destined to die at the claws of the hairiest monster the make-up department can cobble together. Fox made a foray into Universal territory with this admirably eerie werewolf pic. Lucien Ballard, one of Sternberg's protégés, provided the gloomy chiaroscuro photography. The story's a howler, but direction and performances have plenty of bite. Blu-ray Release Date: December 13th, 2016

Western Union BD - 20th Century-Fox's Western Union was loosely based on a story by Zane Grey. The basic historical facts behind the connecting of telegraph wires between Omaha and Salt Lake City serve as a backdrop for a fictional story straight out of Manhattan Melodrama. Randolph Scott and Barton MacLane are cast as brothers who pursue wildly divergent paths in adulthood: Scott, an ex-outlaw, goes to work for Western Union, while MacLane remains a criminal, leading a concerted effort to sabotage the telegraph company. The Indians, too often merely villains in films of this nature, are treated with relative sympathy. Kino Blu-ray Release Date: December 13th, 2016

Creepy BD - Based on a novel by Yutaka Maekawa, Creepy follows ex-police detective and criminal psychologist Takakura (Hidetoshi Nishijima, Dolls), who moves to a quiet suburban town seeking peace and quiet. When a former colleague asks for his assistance on a case involving a disappearing family his investigation leads him to suspect that his neighbour is a psychopath who comes into peoples households and takes over their lives. Blu-ray Release date: January 23rd, 2017

Dead Ringers BD - Elliot (Jeremy Irons), a successful gynecologist, works at the same practice as his identical twin, Beverly (also Irons). Elliot is attracted to many of his patients and has affairs with them. When he inevitably loses interest, he will give the woman over to Beverly, the meeker of the two, without the woman knowing the difference. Beverly falls hard for one of the patients, Claire (Genevičve Bujold), but when she inadvertently deceives him, he slips into a state of madness. Shout! Factory Blu-ray Release Date: November 15th, 2016

So Evil My Love - An innocent woman falls under a villain’s spell in So Evil My Love, a captivating film noir thriller of obsession and deceit starring Ray Milland. In the late 19th century, English widow Olivia Harwood (Ann Todd) meets Mark Bellis (Milland), a charming-but-dangerous criminal and lets him board in her home. Hopelessly in love with a man who is playing her for a fool, Olivia soon descends into a life of crime as Mark persuades her to steal from her friend Susan Courtney (Geraldine Fitzgerald), the wife of a wealthy peer. Discovering a packet of scandalous letters that could ruin the Courtneys’ socially, Olivia blindly follows the scoundrel’s biddings leading down a path of blackmail and murder.
