ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I truly enjoyed seeing John Ford's Young Mr. Lincoln on Criterion Blu-ray this week. Ford's brilliant mythologizing along with Henry Fonda's grandest performance make the film a certified masterpiece. Brian De Palma's Carrie gets the Arrow Blu-ray treatment - 4K Restoration, new commentary - a brilliant package. Billy Wilder's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes is, perhaps, the director's most underrated film and The Masters of Cinema do it justice with their new Blu-ray transfer - the definitive for the film. In Jack Clayton's The Pumpkin Eater Anne Bancroft brings an unforgettable performance as a wife tormented by a marriage in crisis. Indicator's Region FREE Blu-ray offers a flawless presentation with valued supplements. XIVth Olympiad -The Glory of Sport is the 7th Blu-ray of Criterion's Thirty-Two Blu-ray Special Edition 100 Years of Olympic Films detailing the 1948 Winter and Summer games in another fascinating piece of human history. We finish with five later Hammer Studio films - all on Blu-ray from Studio Canal. In a sex-role reversal of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson story, are treated to Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde - a spicy, fun, horror with echoes of Jack the Ripper. Disliked by critics, I appreciated the non-stop vampiric romanticizing of Scars of Dracula with none-other-than Christopher Lee returning as the titular lead. The Horror of Frankenstein was another in the Studio's latter attempts at deviating from the standard yet keeping the Gothic horror conventions the fans love. Demons of the Mind is one of the most ambitious and unusual horror films produced by Hammer - more a psychological drama with blood and gore a an after-thought. Lastly, Straight on Till Morning stars an effective Rita Tushingham and, as the title suggests, carries a Peter Pan reference as a syndrome of naive innocence escaping from the realities of an unprotected world demanding responsibility..

"She's living with a guy the best you can say about him is that sometimes he returns phone calls.." Hollywood Ending

Have an effective week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Carrie BD - Brian De Palma's "Carrie" is an absolutely spellbinding horror movie, with a shock at the end that's the best thing along those lines since the shark leaped aboard in "Jaws." It's also (and this is what makes it so good) an observant human portrait. This girl Carrie isn't another stereotyped product of the horror production line; she's a shy, pretty, and complicated high school senior who's a lot like kids we once knew. Arrow Blu-ray Release date: December 11th, 2017

XIVth Olympiad -The Glory of Sport (Disc 7) BD - Put on "hold" during the war years, the annual Olympic Games were revived in Switzerland and Greece in 1948. Less than three weeks after the conclusion of the Winter Games in St. Moritz, XIVth Olympiad-The Glory of Sport was shipped to thousands of movie theaters in America and Great Britain. Filmed in color, this 130-minute documentary captures all the pomp and splendor of the athletic event, even without the benefit of satellite technology and the instant replay. Commenting upon the action are American sportcasters Ted Husing and Bill Stern, not to mention a host of BBC personalities. Sixteen different versions of XIVth Olympiad were prepared in as many languages for simultaneous release in September of 1948. Blu-ray Release date: December 5th, 2017

The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes BD - In Billy Wilder's cinematic homage to the spirit of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, British stage luminary Robert Stephens plays Holmes, while Colin Blakely is his friend and chronicler Dr. Watson. This self-described "hitherto suppressed and thoroughly fascinating" tale concerns Holmes' search for a missing mining engineer -- a case that may have a far-reaching effect on the national security of England. Along the way, Holmes falls in love for the first time in his life, with enigmatic foreign beauty Gabrielle Valladon (Genevieve Page). In this 1970 film, Wilder emphasizes such then-current topics as homosexuality (notably during the film's prologue) and drug addiction. Christopher Lee, a former screen Holmes himself, has a cameo (minus toupee) as Sherlock's brother Mycroft Holmes. Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Release Date: January 22nd, 2018

The Pumpkin Eater BD - Jo (Anne Bancroft) leaves the banality of her marriage to second husband Giles (Richard Johnson) to wed her screenwriter lover, Jake Armitage (Peter Finch), but insists her new husband adhere to her strict marital ideals. Though their relationship is passionate, Jo, now a mother of six, begins to feel stifled in her role as a doting homemaker -- and increasingly isolated from Peter, who is filming on location in Morocco. Jo's sanity is shaken when it seems Peter is not being faithful. Blu-ray Release date: December 4th, 2017

Scars of Dracula BD - At a remote castle a vampire bat dribbles fresh blood over mouldering remains, resurrecting the infamous Count Dracula (Christopher Lee). Terrified villagers set fire to the castle but later discover that a swarm of vengeful bats has killed the women and children that sought sanctuary in the local church. Dracula’s latest reign of terror has begun. Studio Canal UK Blu-ray Release date: October 30th, 2017

Straight on Till Morning BD - British thriller directed by Peter Collinson. Brenda (Rita Tushingham) is a lonely young woman who occupies her time writing children's stories. Feeling that her native Liverpool is holding her back, she moves to London and tries to join the scene there. After finding work at a trendy boutique, Brenda spots handsome stranger Peter (Shane Briant) and kidnaps his dog as an excuse to go and meet him. The pair get on well and Brenda moves in, but it's not long before she finds herself in danger as a number of Peter's dark secrets are revealed. The cast also includes James Bolam, Katya Wyeth and Annie Ross. Studio Canal UK Blu-ray Release date: January 29th, 2018

Demons of the Mind BD - In the best tradition of the Gothic, the plot is overwhelmed by the themes, and the finer points of the acting frequently lost beneath exuberant displays of emotion. Sometimes it descends into ham - Shane Briant, in particular, seems to have been encouraged to go to extremes and, being fairly new to acting, lacks the confidence to step back - but he and Gillian Hills still manage to be sympathetic as the two teenagers kept under close supervision in the confines of a remote stately home. Studio Canal UK Blu-ray Release date: October 30th, 2017

The Horror of Frankenstein BD - Teenage prodigy Victor Frankenstein tells his father of his ambition to go to university in Vienna. The Baron objects, so Victor coldly sabotages his shooting rifle. The gun explodes in the Baron’s face, killing him. Victor uses his inheritance to decamp to Vienna. Six years pass, and Victor leaves after getting the Dean’s daughter pregnant; returning home with fellow student Wilhelm, he rescues his friend Elizabeth and her father, an eminent professor, from two highwaymen. He kills one, and covertly beheads him. Hidden away from housekeeper and bedwarmer Alys, he and Wilhelm set about researches into the revival of dead tissue. Studio Canal UK Blu-ray Release date: January 29th, 2018

Young Mr. Lincoln BD - Few historical figures are as revered as Abraham Lincoln, and few director-star pairings embody classic American cinema as perfectly as do John Ford and Henry Fonda. In Young Mr. Lincoln, their first collaboration, Fonda gives one of the finest performances of his career as the young president-to-be struggling with an incendiary murder case as a novice lawyer. Compassionate and assured, this indelible piece of Americana marks the beginning of Ford and Fonda’s ascent to legendary status. Blu-ray Release Date: January 9th, 2018

Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde BD - Dr Jekyll is a brilliant scientist who has spent his life trying to create an “antivirus” to cure some of the world’s most deadly diseases. But he realises that his quest to preserve life will ultimately be ended by his own death at some point and decides to test out a serum on himself which he hopes will prolong his life. He needs female hormones to be able to create this serum and enlists the aid of grave robbers Burke and Hare to provide him with fresh corpses to harvest.
