ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): No additional comments this week'.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Macbeth BD - Roman Polanski imbues his unflinchingly violent adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy of ruthless ambition and murder in medieval Scotland with grit and dramatic intensity. Jon Finch and Francesca Annis give performances charged with fury and sex appeal as a decorated warrior rising through the ranks and his driven wife, scheming together to take the throne by any means. Coadapted by Polanski and the great theater critic and dramaturge Kenneth Tynan, and shot against a series of stunning, stark British Isle landscapes, this version of Macbeth is among the most atmospheric and authentic of all Shakespeare films. Blu-ray Release Date: September 23rd, 2014

Ali: Fear Eats the Soul BD - The wildly prolific German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder paid homage to his cinematic hero Douglas Sirk with this update of that filmmaker’s 1955 All That Heaven Allows. A lonely widow (Brigitte Mira) meets a much younger Arab worker (El Hedi ben Salem) in a bar during a rainstorm. They fall in love, to their own surprise—and to the outright shock of their families, colleagues, and drinking buddies. In Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, Fassbinder expertly wields the emotional power of classic Hollywood melodrama to expose the racial tensions underlying contemporary German culture. Blu-ray Release Date: September 30th, 2014

The Big Operator BD - Mickey Rooney plays labor racketeer Little Joe Braun in this fast-paced and surprisingly violent drama about one man's determination to clean up his union. Bill Gibson Steve Cochran is Little Joe's nemesis and is one of the men who can testify that he saw the labor boss in an incriminating conversation with a known criminal -- something that Little Joe denied under oath. Knowing that Cochran and one other witness can bring him down, the crooked labor boss starts on a campaign of terror. One of Bill's friends is set on fire, someone else is thrown into a cement mixer in the opening scenes, and finally, Little Joe kidnaps Bill's son Timmy Jay North. The odds at this point, seem very much in the labor boss' favor. Blu-ray Release date: September 16th, 2014

South of St. Louis BD - McCrea, Scott and Kennedy are partners in a Texan ranch burned out by 'Cottrell's Raiders' (a snarling Jory standing in for Quantrill) during the Civil War. Kennedy joins the Confederate army, while McCrea and Scott - balking at army discipline - are recruited by a saloon girl (Smith) for a profitable venture running munitions from Mexico through the Union blockades. Disillusioned by Scott's increasingly murderous lust for money, McCrea opts out and turns to drink after his girl (Malone) falls for Kennedy. When the war ends, Scott decides to consolidate his position by eliminating Kennedy, now a Texas Ranger; and McCrea is persuaded by Smith, who loves him, to retrieve his self-respect by helping Kennedy. Plenty of action, plus personable performances (McCrea especially). Blu-ray Release date: September 23rd, 2014

Madame DuBarry BD - Before Ernst Lubitsch created his eminently sophisticated Hollywood sex comedies, he was at work in Germany perfecting his earliest entries into the genre, alongside sweeping ironic dramas based on historical events and often set in exotic locales. One of his earliest successes merged elements of both modes: Madame DuBarry. A recounting-à-la-Lubitsch of the torrid affair between the title character (Pola Negri) and France's King Louis XV (Emil Jannings, who would go on to portray Henry VIII in Lubitsch's Anna Boleyn of the following year a film that neatly bookends Madame DuBarry), the picture spans scandalous intrigue at the court and the ring of the guillotine among the riotous mobs of the Revolution. Blu-ray Release date: September 22nd, 2014

Eraserhead BD - Eraserhead follows a sensitive young man as he struggles to cope with impending parenthood. Henry Spencer (Jack Nance) lives in a hopeless industrial landscape, lusting after the beautiful woman who lives in the apartment across the hall. Five years in the making, Eraserhead contains all of the trademark attributes of a Lynch film--haunting visuals, an ethereal score, unsettling sound design, and, most notably, a black sense of humour - creating a world onscreen that is exhilarating, terrifying, and truly unique. Blu-ray Release date: September 16th, 2014

The Gang's All Here BD - The iconic director-choreographer Busby Berkeley's first full-length film in Technicolor is well established as being perhaps the most visually stunning spectacle of any Hollywood musical. But to focus on this risks overlooking its exuberant performances, gleeful humour, sensational music and glowing romance, amidst countless other pleasures. A young soldier's fast-struck love affair with a New York City nightclub singer, despite his long-standing betrothal to a wealthy childhood friend, provides the catalyst for this dizzying parade of home-front melodrama, comic set-pieces and mind-boggling musical numbers (including 'The Lady in the Tutti-Frutti Hat' and 'The Polka-Dot Polka'). Blu-ray Release date: September 15th, 2014

Night Moves BD - Kelly Reichardt's suspense-thriller NIGHT MOVES is the story of three radical environmentalists coming together to execute the most intense protest of their lives: the explosion of a hydroelectric dam. Harmon (Peter Sarsgaard, The Killing) is a former Marine, radicalized by tours of duty overseas. His life in the military is behind him, but at heart he remains excited by the prospect of mayhem and destruction. Dena (Dakota Fanning, The Twilight Saga) is a high-society dropout who s moved west and cut ties with her family, edging ever deeper into radical politics. And Josh (Jesse Eisenberg, Social Network), their leader, is a self-made militant, devoted to the protection of the earth by any means necessary. As the three plan, carry out and then witness the fallout of their attention-grabbing act of sabotage, they find their own personal limits tested on a journey of doubt, paranoia and unintended consequences. Blu-ray Release date: September 2nd, 2014

Premature Burial BD - The third of Corman's generally impressive Poe cycle suffers from the fact that Milland, rather than Vincent Price (lead in most of the other entries in the series), stars as the cataleptic medical student haunted by fantastic fears of being buried alive like his father before him. Needless to say, nightmare becomes reality and revenge is meted out; indeed, the predictability of the plotting clearly led Corman to focus his attention, somewhat decoratively, on conjuring up a gloomy Gothic atmosphere that, while effective, too often seems an end in itself, rather than a means of creating horror. The film does have its macabre moments, however, notably Milland proudly showing friends around a tomb he has devised for himself, complete with a variety of exits should his worst dreams come true. Blu-ray Release date: August 24th, 2012

The Innocents BD - Jack Clayton's celebrated screen adaptation of Henry James's The Turn of the Screw (1898) is a brilliant exercise in psychological horror. Impressionable and repressed governess Miss Giddens (Deborah Kerr) agrees to tutor two orphaned children, Miles and Flora. On arrival at Bly House, she becomes convinced that the children are possessed by the perverse spirits of former governess Miss Jessel and her Heathcliffe-like lover Quint (Peter Wyngarde), who both met with mysterious deaths. The film's sinister atmosphere is carefully created - not through shock tactics, but through its cinematography, soundtrack, and decor: Freddie Francis' beautiful CinemaScope photography, with its eerily indistinct long shots and mysterious manifestations at the edges of the frame; an evocative and spooky soundtrack; and the grand yet decaying Bly House. Blu-ray Release date: September 23rd, 2014

Man Hunt BD - One of the best-loved of Lang's spy dramas, MAN HUNT is a superbly exciting, tightly constructed picture which stars Pidgeon, terrific as Thorndike, a big-game hunter in the Bavarian Alps who accidentally discovers that he has a chance to assassinate Hitler. Apprehended by Gestapo leader Quive-Smith (Sanders), he refuses to sign a confession and is beaten and left for dead. With the help of a friendly youngster (McDowall), Thorndike stows away on a Danish steamer. Also on board, however, is the mysterious, umbrella-wielding Mr. Jones (Carradine), who has Thorndike's passport and has taken his identity. Befriended by a friendly cockney prostitute (Bennett, rarely better) in London, Thorndike eventually has a memorable showdown with Jones in a subway tunnel. Our dashing hero isn't out of danger yet, though; Quive-Smith threatens as well, and it's up to a hatpin to save the day. Blu-ray Release date: August, 2014

Fitzcarraldo BD - "Fitzcarraldo" (1982) is one of those brave and epic films, like "Apocalypse Now" or "2001," where we are always aware both of the film, and of the making of the film. Herzog could have used special effects for his scenes of the 360-ton boat being hauled up a muddy 40-degree slope in the jungle, but he believed we could tell the difference: "This is not a plastic boat." Watching the film, watching Fitzcarraldo (Klaus Kinski) raving in the jungle in his white suit and floppy panama hat, watching Indians operating a block-and-tackle system to drag the boat out of the muck, we're struck by the fact that this is actually happening, that this huge boat is inching its way onto land -- as Fitzcarraldo (who got his name because the locals could not pronounce "Fitzgerald") serenades the jungle with his scratchy old Caruso recordings. Blu-ray Release date: August 25th, 2014

Cobra Verde BD - The final collaboration of Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski yielded mixed results. Kinski, who would die in 1991, was still able to convey explosive emotional outbursts very effectively. At the same time he comes across as hollow and unfocused in his performance. Herzog tried very hard to work what he saw as his frequent muse's fading focus into the narrative but for some reason the whole thing never quite gels. Blu-ray Release Date: August 25th, 2014

Nocturne - The moody mystery melodrama Nocturne was produced by longtime Alfred Hitchcock associate Joan Harrison. The film wastes no time getting started, with a caddish Hollywood composer (Edward Ashley) dropping dead right after the opening credits. The police think it's a suicide, but maverick lieutenent Joe Warne (George Raft) suspects foul play. Checking around, Warne discovers that the dead man had broken at least ten female hearts in the past few years, providing a motive for murder for all ten. The principal suspect is Frances Ransom (Lynn Bari), who may or may not have been avenging her sister, nightclub thrush Carol Page (Virginia Huston). Pursuing the case with such dogged diligence that he's eventually tossed off the police force, Warne nonetheless refuses to give up, and by film's end he has collared the murderer. DVD Release Date: February 14th, 2014

Incident - Knuckles Morgan is not the kind of goon you want to meet on a dark street after midnight. But that's just what happens to law-abiding citizen Joe Downey. Mistaken for one of Knuckles gangland rivals, Joe is beaten and left for the cops to pick up. Afterward, Joe and his girlfriend begin a perilous hunt to find his look-alike - a hunt that crosses paths with a predatory blonde who has a penchant for stolen fur coats and a connection to murder. This gutsy, no-frills noir is directed by William "One-Shot" Beaudine, whose 371-credit (some say over 500-credit) career includes some of the Bowery Boys' best features. Warren Douglas (Cry Vengeance) stars, and you might recognize Jane Frazee, who plays Joe's girlfriend, as a frequent leading lady in Roy Rogers Westerns. DVD Release Date: July 22nd, 2014

The Boy From Space - When brother and sister Dan and Helen see a strange object falling from the sky one night, they set out to look for traces of a meteorite in the nearby sand-pit. There, they are confronted by a strange thin man, and discover a boy called Peep-peep who speaks a bizarre alien language. Originally broadcast in 1971, as part of the BBC’s educational ‘Look and Read’ strand, The Boy from Space was shown again in 1980 in a revised version featuring new presenters Wordy and Cosmo, as well as updates – including a new forward and a voice-over – to the main drama. DVD Release Date: 25 August 25th, 2014

The Empty Hours - On the desolated coast of Veracruz, 17 year-old Sebastián takes over running his uncle's small and cozy rent-by-the hour motel. There he meets Miranda, a regular customer who comes to the motel to meet a lover who always keeps her waiting. As Sebastián and Miranda get to know each other, an ambiguous game of seduction begins between them. DVD Release Date: August 19th, 2014

Black Magic - Based on a novel by Alexander Dumas, BLACK MAGIC stars Orson Welles as the 18th century master hypnotist and charismatic charlatan, Cagliostro. After his mother is executed for supposedly practicing "witchcraft," young Joseph Balsamo is raised by gypsies. Under their tutelage, he perfects his skills performing magic tricks and selling snake oil in the gypsy's travelling caravan show. Eventually Balsamo meets Franz Mesmer, the famous hypnotist, who convinces Joseph he has even greater gifts which could heal the sick. But Joseph chooses a very different path assuming the name Cagliostro and embarking on a vendetta for power over the man who ordered his mother's death. DVD Release Date: November 20, 2012

Below the Deadline - "They taught this G.I. to use a gun... and hes using it" exclaimed the publicity for this film noir programmer. Turns out G.I. Joe Hilton uses his fists more than a gun, but the point remains: The battle-hardened veteran is no one to take lightly. Returned from combat in the Pacific, Joe is haunted by the carnage he witnessed and resentful of those who stayed behind and got rich while he served his country. Now its Joe's turn. "I'm going to get mine and nobody's going to stop me", he declares. He falls in with corrupt political kingmakers and their gambling rackets centered on a dice scam called 26 Game. But in the thematic world of film noir, the dice may not always tumble in Joes favor. Warren Douglas, who plays Joe, would combine acting with a writing career that included the scripts for many early-TV Westerns produced by Warner Bros. Director William Beaudine gives the film his trademark "One Shot" efficiency. DVD Release Date: July 22nd, 2014

Blood Orgy of the She Devils - A coven of near-naked witches are driven into a wild orgiastic killing frenzy by throbbing native drums. Bound on the blood-splattered altar, the terrified screams of struggling male captives go unheard as razor sharp spears plunge into their hearts. Queen Mara - whose dark power hails from Lucifer himself - has unleashed her reign of terror, hell-bent on avenging centuries of witch-burnings. The authorities are baffled as the brutal homicides multiply. When psychic Professor Helford and his team of exorcists zero in on Queen Mara's castle, all the demonic forces of Satan are unleashed in a final cataclysmic clash of good and evil. DVD Release Date: August 19th, 2014

Fear in the Night - One of several low-budget mellers directed by scriptwriter Maxwell Shane, Fear in the Night was based on the short story Nightmare by William Irish (pseudonym for Cornell Woolrich). In his first starring role, DeForest Kelley plays Vince Grayson, a young man who has a terrible nightmare wherein he sees himself killing someone. When he awakens, Vince finds a couple of pieces of evidence indicating that his dream was no dream. Detective Cliff Herlihy (Paul Kelly) doesn't believe that Vince has killed anyone, but agrees to investigate. While taking shelter from a storm in a remote mansion, the detective and the young man stumble upon a mirrored room -- just like the one in Vince's dream. The frenzied Vince is nearly driven to suicide, but Detective Herlihy deduces that his friend's nightmare was the handiwork of Lewis Belnap (Robert Emmett Keane), the mansion's owner, who is a dabbler in hypnosis. Fear in the Night was remade in 1956 as Nightmare, with Kevin McCarthy and Edward G. Robinson Film Chest DVD Release Date: August 26th, 2014

Quicksand - Quicksand was sandwiched between Mick’s “sports films” which were made with the intention of changing his on screen persona as the perpetual kid from Carvel High by placing him in more mature roles. During this run Mick plays a boxer (Killer McCoy), race car driver (The Big Wheel) and a roller derby skater (Fireball). While all entertaining in there own right, it’s Quicksand that leaves little doubt that Mick has shook off the dust from the town of Carvel and the Hardy family home and entered the adult world. Quicksand served to pave the way for his foray in noir with subsequence films such as The Strip, Drive a Crooked Road, and Baby Face Nelson all released in the ‘50’s. Film Chest DVD Release Date: August 26th, 2014

The Brave Don't Cry - The Brave Don't Cry (1952) a reconstruction of a disaster at Knockshinnoch Castle Colliery, Ayrshire, in 1950, dramatises the tense events of the rescue of miners trapped underground after a pit shaft was flooded and nine men were lost. The difficult and dangerous rescue of all the survivors was made through abandoned workings full of gas. The film features actors from the Glasgow Citizen's Theatre. Originally to be titled "What God Forgot", and made by John Grierson's Group 3 company it was premiered under its new title at the Edinburgh Film Festival in August 1952, with an invited audience of miners. It was also shown that year at the Venice Film Festival. DVD Release Date: July 2014
