ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): While I was totally enamored with The Kelly Reichardt Collection on Blu-ray and fully endorse, I nudge Locke to the top spot this week. Both are very pure cinema - not to all tastes, but I felt so lucky they were part of my past week's viewing pleasure. Include in that Murnau's Faust in 1080P from The Masters of Cinema group. An absolute must-own. And yet another impressive film to Blu-ray is Jules Dassin's Night and the City looking notable in the higher resolution. What a Noir gem. I was in heaven. We have identified that the, out-of-print, Twilight Time Blu-ray transfer of Brian DePalma's Body Double has been virtually copied in Europe. Maurice Pialat's We Won't Grow Old Together is a brilliant film but the 1080P transfer yields most results. John Huston's The Unforgiven has so much going for it - although it didn't totally click with me. While I'm a fan of Charles Bronson - enjoying Hard Times, Death Wish, The Mechanic, Yukon and many others - I just wasn't quite as keen on Breakheart Pass or Mr. Majestyk but both are available Blu-ray. Eric covered the Second Run DVD of Independencia - the very highly lauded film out of The Philippines.. Relax and enjoy... Gary.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Kelly Reichardt Collection BD - This essential collection brings together for the first time on Blu-Ray the three films that helped establish Kelly Reichardt as one of the most important auteurs of American independent cinema: Old Joy (2006), Wendy and Lucy (2008) and Meek's Cutoff (2010). Also included as a Bonus Feature is her remarkable debut film, River of Grass (1994), never previously available in the UK. Other Bonus Features include audio of a masterclass given by Kelly Reichardt at Oxford University in 2014, the short stories by Jonathan Raymond upon which Old Joy and Wendy and Lucy are based, and a booklet written by long-time Reichardt collaborator Larry Fessenden. Blu-ray Release Date: August 25th, 2014

We Won't Grow Old Together BD - Maurice Pialat's powerful romantic drama examines the final period of a long and ultimately unhappy affair. Jean (Jean Yanne) is an unpleasant, domineering man. Though he still lives with his wife, their marriage has been over for a long time. For six years, Jean has had an affair with the much-younger Catherine (Marlene Jobert). The dynamic of their relationship is moving it toward disintegration also, but Catherine resists it. Scenes of alternating recriminations and reconciliations unveil the anatomy of their breakup. Blu-ray Release Date: August 12th, 2014

Faust BD - Murnau's last German film features astonishing photography, magnificent art direction, and special effects which retain the power to amaze. Freed from the constraints of psychological narrative, Murnau's mastery of cinematic technique places Faust at the pinnacle of the silent era, its barrage of visceral and apocryphal imagery contrasting with the simplicity and directness of its spiritual theme. In collaboration with the screenwriter Hans Kyser, Murnau fused Faust's script from German folk legend and the works of Goethe, Gounod, and Marlowe (particularly using the latter's tone). Blu-ray Release Date: August 18th, 2014

Breakheart Pass BD - Posing as a fugitive from justice, frontier undercover agent John Deakin Charles Bronson boards a train to go after a ruthless gang of outlaws. Ingredients essential to the action include an anti-military conspiracy involving gunrunners and Indians, a phony epidemic, and a down-and-dirty traintop fight between Deakin and Carlos boxer-turned-actor Archie Moore. Breakheart Pass was adapted for the screen by Alistair MacLean from his own novel. Blu-ray Release date: August 12th, 2014

Night and the City BD - Deep within the bowels of shadow-infested London, two-bit hustler Harry Fabian (Richard Widmark) struggles to live a life of ease and plenty. Trailed by an inglorious history of go-nowhere schemes, Fabian stumbles upon a chance of a lifetime in the form of legendary wrestler Gregorius the Great (Stanislaus Zbyszko). But there is no easy money in this underworld of shifting alliances, bottomless graft, and sweaty, pummeled flesh and soon Fabian learns the horrible price of his overweening ambition. Night and the City is a crowning achievement of legendary director Jules Dassin and quintessential film noir. Blu-ray Release Date: November 22nd, 2013

The Unforgiven BD - One of Hollywood's most famous and acclaimed directors, John Huston guides this western with an unerring hand -- the cast of notable stars is no drawback either. Setting up the story with a series of suspenseful scenes, Huston has a mysterious stranger on horseback come into a small community in the Texas Panhandle and then proceed to cause a mini-war. The time is the mid-19th century and there is already antagonism between the white settlers in the community and the local Kiowa Indian nation. The Zachary family is at the crux of the trouble. Matilda (Lillian Gish) is the matriarch who holds a family secret -- her adopted daughter Rachel (Audrey Hepburn) is actually a Kiowa child. Kino Lorber Blu-ray release date August 12th, 2014

Body Double (Twilight Time added) BD - In Body Double, director Brian DePalma pays homage to the Alfred Hitchcock movies Vertigo and Rear Window, adding a few grotesque touches all his own. Craig Wasson plays Jake, a struggling actor who keeps losing jobs because of his claustrophobia. To make matters worse, his girlfriend has walked out on him, so he has no place to sleep. His pal offers him the use of his apartment for the evening. The apartment happens to be equipped with a huge picture window and telescope, enabling him to spy on his beautiful neighbor Gloria (Deborah Shelton) while she undresses. He also bears witness to her brutal murder. And then he meets a porn star (Melanie Griffith), who has just taken a job posing as the late Gloria. Twilight Time Blu-ray Release Date: July, 2011

Locke BD - Hardy is Ivan, a construction worker (also unaccountably and a little distractingly Welsh), who leaves a building site the night before a huge project as a valued worker and beloved family man. He then locks himself in his car and drives through the night, during which time his career, wife and two sons will gradually slip away from him. Or rather he will gradually push them away as he unburdens his conscience over a series of phone calls and heads toward the biggest mistake of his life. Blu-ray Release date: August 12th, 2014

Mr. Majestyk BD - Charles Bronson, his eyes just about open, strides through this film as a paternalistic melon-grower in Colorado, anti-racist, tolerant of unions (well, you can tell, he gets the melon-picking union girl in the end; how does Cristal keep her hair so black and shiny after all that sweaty work?), who falls foul of local crooks and labour racketeers. But melon-grower beats ruthless psychopath, casting aspersions at the police force en route. Fleischer handles a heavy script and most of the acting like no one should handle a melon; but he really soars into competence at moments of tension, car chases, and general cinematic escapism. Kino Lorber Blu-ray Release Date: August 12th, 2014

Independencia - Fleeing the American invasion of the Philippines in the early 20th Century, a mother and son retreat into the jungle where they make a home. Time passes; a wounded woman is rescued; the mother dies; a child is born. The family survive isolated from the growing chaos engulfing their country, but a storm approaches that threatens their existence as American troops draw nearer. Ingeniously staged on studio sets that evoke the lost period of early and silent cinema, Independencia's mesmerising visual aesthetic creates a lush metaphor for the mythical history and identity of the Philippines.
