ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Despite the sluggishness of summer releases - I had some impressive Blu-ray viewings. Source Code is quite a ride, I didn't like it as much as last week's Limitless but I can't deny the tension and strong transfer. The Name of the Rose has a wonderful aura and is a magnificently realized medieval mystery. Winter in Wartime is a great book, impressively brought to the screen - and well worth watching. The Egyptian retains the epic feel although can seem a bit hollow at times - it is nice to see older films reach the Blu-ray format. Red Planet has a schlocky edge but that can also be a positive if you are in the mood for its space-adventure charms. Monamour has that Brass brassiness that his fans have come to expect. Eric covers two mid 70's Canadian films on DVD - of which I may watch the more touted Dogpound Shuffle while the forgotten Alien Thunder with Donald Sutherland may get a irrevocable pass.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Name of the Rose BD - Based on Umberto Eco's best-selling novel, "The Name of the Rose" is a medieval whodunit set in a Benedictine Abbey, 1327. Franciscan monk William of Baskerville (Sean Connery) and a young novice (Christian Slater) arrive for a conference (council on the Franciscan's Order's belief that the Church should rid itself of wealth) to find that several monks have been brutally murdered, prompting his peers into believing the apocalypse is coming. In his attempt to solve the crimes, William must challenge the authority of the Catholic Church by eschewing religious fervor in favor of rational thought. Blu-ray Release Date: August 2nd, 2011

Winter in Wartime BD - January 1945. Nazi occupied Holland lies under a blanket of snow. A young man, Michiel, defiant in his hatred for the Nazis, inadvertently receives a map detailing the hiding place of a crashed RAF pilot and sets off to prove his worth. He finds the pilot, Jack, badly injured, but the situation becomes more desperate when a dead Nazi trooper is found and the hunt for the killer commences. Unaware of the terrible consequences that await his family, Michiel decides to help Jack escape, undertaking a perilous journey that could cost him everything he has ever known. From the Producer of the multi-award winning Black Book, and co-starring Jamie Campbell Bower (Harry Potter: Deathly Hallows & Twilight New Moon), Winter in Wartime is a breathtaking cinematic masterpiece that shows the true human cost of a terrible conflict. In the darkest days of the coldest winter, a hero will be made.
Blu-ray Release Date: July 26th, 2011

The Egyptian BD - In eighteenth-dynasty Egypt, Sinuhe, a poor orphan, becomes a brilliant physician and with his friend Horemheb is appointed to the service of the new Pharoah. Sinuhe's personal triumphs and tragedies are played against the larger canvas of the turbulent events of the 18th dynasty. As Sinuhe is drawn into court intrigues, and bizarre secrets are revealed to him, he learns the answers to the questions he has sought since his birth. Short on historical accuracy but strong on plot and characterization.
Blu-ray Release date: July 12th, 2011

Monamour BD - Tinto Brass' Monamour, is the love-story of a Venetian girl and a Frenchman in the beautiful city of Mantua. Dario, her husband is too busy to notice his wife's sexual drifting, when her adultery "born out of neglect and frustration" starts on the day she meets a tall dark stranger in a museum. An intoxicating mix of lies, betrayal and fantasy follows Marta into her personal diary where every emotion and passion is recorded.

In an assignment unlike any he's ever known, he learns he's part of a government experiment called the "Source Code," a program that enables him to cross over into another man's identity in the last eight minutes of his life. With a second, much larger target threatening to kill millions in downtown Chicago, Colter re-lives the incident over and over again, gathering clues each time, until he can solve the mystery of who is behind the bombs and prevent the next attack.

Also on the mission is the multifunctional robo-assistant AMEE. In one mode, she's a as loyal as a puppy.
