(aka "Der Name der Rose" or "Le Nom de la rose" or "Il Nome della rosa")
directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud
France/Italy/West Germany 1986
Based on Umberto Eco's best-selling novel, "The Name of the Rose" is a medieval whodunit set in a Benedictine Abbey, 1327. Franciscan monk William of Baskerville (Sean Connery) and a young novice (Christian Slater) arrive for a conference (council on the Franciscan's Order's belief that the Church should rid itself of wealth) to find that several monks have been brutally murdered, prompting his peers into believing the apocalypse is coming. In his attempt to solve the crimes, William must challenge the authority of the Catholic Church by eschewing religious fervor in favor of rational thought. As more deaths occur the investigation draws closer to uncovering the secret the Abbey - its hidden library. William and his young novice must race against time to prove the innocence of the unjustly accused misshapen worker , and avoid the wrath of Holy Inquisitor Bernardo Gui (F. Murray Abraham). A unique and interesting film with strong performances. out of |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Warner - Region FREE - Blu-ray - July 11': This is a strong upgrade from the previous compared DVDs. I should state that the German Blu-ray (not compared here) has not been favorably reviewed and doesn't have the same extras - as far as we've been told. This Warner (US) 1080P transfer has superb grain and excellent detail in close-ups. It looks solid with only a few aberrations. Contrast is adept, there are instances of depth and there is a shade more in formation in the frame. With the mediocre reports of the German hi-def disc - I was pleasantly surprised by the image quality. Audio as well get a notable upgrade with a lossless DTS-HD Master 5.1 track at 3555 kbps. The validating score is by the iconic James Horner and it sounds super via the hi-def rendering. There are some definite moments of separation although I wouldn't say the surround was extensively utilized. Bass-y depth is apparent and overall this supports the film experience much more significantly than the SD-DVDs. There are many optional DUBs and subtitles and the Blu-ray is, appropriately, region FREE. Extras mimic the first disc of the 2004 European DVD (and region 1 disc) with the Jean-Jacques Annaud commentaries in both English and French - the latter with or without subtitles, plus the 45-minute German documentary - "The Abbey of Crime" and the 6-minute Photo video journey with the director. This was easily the best presentation of The Name of the Rose that I have seen in the home theater - impressive a/v and the same insightful extras. Tack on the price offers exceptional value and this Blu-ray is a thumbs up recommendation. *** ADDITION (Warner PAL- Sept 05') - Big thanks to Alain for coming up with the Warner PAL caps, which appear slightly sharper than the corresponding Region 1's. Firstly, the Brazilian R0 can't compete in any department, so lets not talk about it anymore. Image quality differences between the Warner PAL + NTSC may be negligible, but in the extras, obviously the 2-disc PAL edition is king. The second disc of the Warner PAL does have many subtitle options. RE: Commentaries - Annaud was asked by Warner to do it over 2 years ago but he hadn't seen the movie since it was completed and he admits that the English commentary (same on both Warners) is thus bad. But the PAL edition has a more recent French language commentary as well by Annaud - this time he was prepared and it's very informative...but no unfortunately no English subs. So the definitive edition would have to be considered to be the 2-disc PAL one, although for casual fans the NTSC will suffice. NOTE: Just a brief word of warning to anyone planning to buy the French Warner 2-disc edition of The Name of the Rose - although the content is indeed identical to the Benelux version, it has NO subtitles on the second disc. (Thanks Phil!) ***
Well, not much of a comparison as it is so lopsided. The time difference tells me that the Brazilian edition probably came from a PAL source. Aside from that it is hazy (greenish tinge), dark, poor subtitles, poor extras, weak audio and colors are extremely dull. It's about time Region 1 was given this fine film on DVD with some real quality. Warner have included some nice extras coupled with the crisp anamorphic image - its not perfect, but beside the Flash Star it sure looks it. Audio is bumped to a fine 5.1 track on the Warner. I see some minor edge enhancement too. I am aware of an R2 - 2 disc version (5 year old one - TF1 Video - poor - which is marred by it having burnt-on French subtitles - no extras.) and a new one- that is reported to be excellent (same menus as this). I hope we can compare one day. (Thanks to Peter for the info.) |
